THURSDAY JUNE 13’13
Gorgeous day and none of the pouring rain Wednesday’s class got.
We are doing old glass & stone jars and bottles, with a tiny lustrous Satsuma porcelain dish tossed in.
All collected over the years and all with a story.
The colours needed to be soft and translucent and pick up the touches of reflected colour nearby.
The stone bottles are solid and glazed, so again needing lights and darks which make them round, without resorting to colouring in.
Next was Raglan Gallery a brisk walk away and showing the best selection of glass, ceramics and contemporary paintings this side of the bridge.
Jan the owner has always had a great eye for colour and that’s what we all respond to.
This is more practice for travelling and visiting galleries and exhibitions which can sometimes overwhelm you. If you decide to sketch a few small pieces which you like, then you have something memorable to take away and you’ll have loved the experience.
Lunch was next door at Foundry 53. An old favourite and it was nice to be back again.
Everyone enjoyed the day and very happy with their sketches.

FRIDAY JUNE 14 ’13
FRIDAY JUNE 14 ’13
Quite a day. Christy opened up and began the class while I took Milton off to have his hip replacement.
Back I came just as everyone had completed their second sketch of the glass bottles and stone jars. All really capturing the translucence of one and the opaqueness of the other.
Christy had her big camera so she also photographed the work outside in the bright light.
Down we all went to Raglan Gallery and sketched the gorgeous ceramics and figures which appealed to each. Somehow being there must have attracted a buyer as one of the huge paintings was last seen walking up the street.
Next door we went to Foundry 53 for lunch and a surprise!
A birthday. Toni was turning forty something and Barb her gorgeous Mum had secretly delivered her famous carrot and walnut cake into the cafe earlier.
Next Victor her husband, and Pete her Dad rock on in – and it’s party time!
Coffee was ordered, candles were lit and our singing must have been heard way up the street.
What a great occasion. So lovely that Sketch Class is such a social event. Everybody is included and much chatting and laughing takes place.
Surprisingly everybody finishes their colour and Christy and I manage to get pics of the work still there.
How exciting it all was.
Oh just one more exciting sketch to show you. Barb has designed her first illustrated recipe. So beautifully done and something to treasure.

SATURDAY JUNE 15 ’13
SATURDAY JUNE 15 ’13
Again lots of fascinating things happening today.
Alissa Duke, well known Urban Sketcher joined us today to show how she uses watercolour pencil with waterbrush.
She’s worked out just what colours she likes and ways to apply the waterbrush to soften the colour. Everybody discussed points they’d learned and would be using themselves.
Just one sketch each today before Alissa’s demo, and then on to Raglan Gallery.
Today some liked the bronze nudes, and the round ceramic horse. Others chose the twisted glass shape, and some the Dean Smith ‘Outer Moons’ round bowls with salt crusted insides.
Next door we all went to order a well deserved coffee and to complete what we were working on or sketch the cafe interior. Plus some delicious food of course..
Alissa discovered that the takeaway coffee cups were blank – and mat finished – perfect for sketching on, which she did.
Christy again did the honours with her fab photos, as well as giving a hand to anyone needing some reassurance about their sketches.
Our final sketches are a mix of Cafe and gallery ones.
Whew we achieved a lot this week and loved it.
