Off to a flying start for our first week of Term 4.
We have 2 New Sketcher classes and both did extremely well as you will see from the sketches below. We spend time on the foundation skills in the Studio when you begin, getting familiar with page planning, observing and first steps in colour. What you learn here is the core of our EH travel sketching program.
We had a visitor this week. Tony McNeight from Auckland in New Zealand was with us to observe some of our classes. We are very excited to announce that Tony will be heading up ErinHill Sketching NZ, starting in Term 1 2016. The Studio will be based in Devonport, a ferry ride across the water from Auckland city. Similarly to Manly and Sydney city. Get in touch if you’d like to sign up.
Getting back to sketching after a break is also a great chance for all classes to review the way we go about Travel sketching. We learn to observe quickly, get lines down boldly and apply colour. As one of our sketchers discovered when travelling overseas recently, you are on the move constantly. If you don’t get your sketch down fast you get left behind.
Talking of colour. What is the difference between w’colour pencils and watercolour paint. Answer: pure convenience. That’s why we teach you to master both. When you want to apply colour you have a choice.
Planning your sketch was very much on our agenda this week. Remember your first sketch lesson where you visually measured How high. How wide. Where’s the centre? Well that’s what you do forever. Be it a flower, a street, vista or whatever. You look at the shapes. Get your big shapes down and then you can see where everything else fits in. A jigsaw puzzle. Find the pieces.
Your tutors are very impressed with your first weeks work. Feel very proud everyone. Take a look. You hit the ground running. Your flight is leaving. You certainly didn’t get left behind!
