Last week of term 1. This term’s adventure was for all classes to visit Quarantine Station and sketch. There is much history here and from the 1700’s to late 60’s anybody with an infectious disease was isolated from the community in what seems like a spot in paradise.
The early ships coming to Australia after months at sea, would have to send all passengers, staff and crew here if there was anybody on board who was unwell. You’d stay here for many weeks till it was clear which way things would go. For first class passengers who were not infected, it was an enforced beach holiday – as old photos show. But for 2nd, 3rd class and steerage passengers you were efficiently looked after in very basic conditions.
Our 10 ‘Find & Sketch’ clues, sent you on a bit of an investigation around the museum sections, sketching and making notes as you went. You soon got the picture. It wasn’t a party place for many.
We look forward to seeing our students return next term ready for more new locations and discovery. This is travel sketching. You never know what the subject will be.
