Always an exciting and eagerly anticipated week- Watercolours! Finally new sketchers discovered for themselves the joy contained in that small travel set of jewel bright colours. In the studio, they wet down the paints, then experimented with water to paint ratio, painting colour swatches and labelling each one. They let colours run together to create happy accidents and documented their favourite combinations. This week was all about getting in touch with their inner child.
After time in the studio becoming familiar their palettes and china graph pencils, it was off to Gilbert Park or Manly Cove to sketch a palm tree, with Manly putting on brilliant sunshine for the occasion. Hard to believe these students are beginners, such was the standard of their first watercolours. As tutors we can’t wait to see more fabulous sketches. Let the fun begin!
Our quirky Fabric and Folds still life this week was inspired by the diversity of colour and style in the clothing we see on our travels, from the locals in Manly to the souks in Casablanca. The myriad of patterns and shapes we see walking down laneways, hanging in the markets or displayed in the fancy designer stores.
We warmed up our fingers, minds and eyes with a continuous line drawing again, such a great way to hone observation skills. Next, we blocked out the outline of dress, hat and pinstriped suit as one shape and added the details like draped tie, lapels and buttons and floral pattern on the dress. Colour was added as a loose wash down the middle and then either allowed to dry or a second complementary colour dropped in as the floral detail while still damp.
Second sketches were of shoes or scarves and once again the result was such a varied selection of sketches, each one as individual as the person who produced it.
Our location this week was our eclectic local thrift shop, Lifeline, brimful of sketch opportunities. We found spots to sketch out of the way of customers, sketching racks of clothing, shelves full of shoes and rolls of fabric. Then we headed over to Manly Deli to fill our growling bellies with fresh wholesome food and good coffee.
Well done to all our sketchers this week, each one of you produced wonderfully loose, personality filled sketches. Great to see them all lined up next to each other. see you all next week.
Thanks for a fab week. Kathy and Toni.
From EHS Auckland This week was about observing ‘things going away’. Angled bookcases, corners of chairs or units, and to notice how they become smaller as they go away. Well done class.
EHS Auckland Intensive. ‘People up close and personal’
Such a great group and we’re all delighted that you now see people as ‘just shapes’ too. Wide and varied but still shapes. Great results NZ.
From EHS Melbourne For our classes this week it was out and about looking at ‘Flat Perspective’. Watercolour was flowing and some great results from everyone. We like your autumn coloured leaves and cafe sketches too. A good day for all.
