Week 10. Water, Reflections, Houseboats and Plonk

July 5, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY, NEW SKETCHERS & GENERAL. 10AM. JULY 3 ’14 Well what a cracker of a day for our last days of Term 2. We are sketching at a narrow neck of beach and boating called The Spit.  Connecting two suburbs is a bridge which rises in the centre to allow passing boats to go from one side to the other. It’s always fascinating to watch unless you happen to be the one impatiently waiting in your car to get across. […]

Advanced Sketching beside the Seaside

July 5, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

ADVANCED SKETCHING. 10AM FRIDAY JULY 4 ’14 This weather is remarkable. Only because it’s Winter but behaving like Summer.  Just love it. Makes you so alive. Specially when you’re going sketching! Judy and I had our two classes together today, but we each did our own thing,  although we’re working within the same location. The Advanced Sketchers were trying another new way to sketch. We were putting down mixed colours in watercolour then doing our black line sketch over that when […]

Sketching Workshop Taupo New Zealand

December 14, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 11 ’13 Taupo is an enormous and very deep lake, in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand. Surrounded by little settlements and a main town centre, one of the big attractions is the mountains for skiing and trout fishing. When you arrive from the south, it tempts and taunts you as the road dips down to the cold blue water lapping on pumice shores, then takes you back through the forest before leading you back […]

Seashells & Sunlotion, The Wharf in Chinagraph

August 10, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY AUG 8 ’13 Are those raindrops on the windows? Are those rainclouds on the horizon? Are those puddles I see on the pavement? Well guess what!  Rain never hurt anyone, least of all sketchers. Today’s warmup sketch was to be a Fijian moment, with Sunhat, sunscreen, Hibiscus and seashells, and what better day to do just that. Umbrellas were shaken and left damply in a corner, and smiles appeared at our sunny still lifes. People happily started, still remembering […]

Baskets, Manly Ferry & the Cove

May 11, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY MAY 9 ’13 I know I keep talking about the weather but it’s just too beautiful. Downunder we should be headed for cold. That’s usually june. MMmmm. In the Studio where all the action was, we were doing baskets. Round ones, long ones, lidded ones and 2 little old dolls from Peru. A nice touch. Yes there are some challenges. Getting each shape right, getting the inside shadows to show corners turning, the light on top, the darker sides […]

Under the Market Umbrella

At last a Summer’s Day

December 29, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

Now THIS is what we like. Summer = blue skies, Sun not too hot, Sparkling water, slight breeze. Umbrella up. Same for everybody really. Now that the hurley burley is over we can flop on the sofas, stick our feet out and let go. This is the life. Worked all year for this. We have our swims, eat more ham or turkey – in sandwiches or salads – not tiring of it yet! Friends come and go and we just love […]

Sydney Hobart Boxing Day start

Sydney Hobart Race

December 27, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

This is one of the biggest yachting races in the Southern hemisphere. Every Boxing Day yachts as small as 30 metres and up to Super Maxis compete on a 3 day dash from Sydney to Hobart in Tasmania. We didn’t get the Christmas day rain but we sure as heck had a huge southerly buster. Every year these adventurous folk get themselves into all weather gear, and hit the ocean to work themselves day and night till they arrive in […]

Early Morning on the Cove

It Must be Christmas…..

December 24, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

It must be Christmas when….. the yachts and launches moor overnight in the Cove….This is the glorious sight I beheld this morning as I sat out to sketch the soft colour with everything almost in silhouette. Earlier in December a few begin to stay over on weekends. On boxing day there will be dozens and for NY eve you could walk across the bay over them and not touch the sea. It must be Christmas when…. we have the biggest […]

Delicious Fruit & Beach Sketches

November 3, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

Nov1,2 & 3.’12. You’ll want to eat some of the fruit sketches you see here from our weekly classes. THURSDAY NOV 1 ’12 We could feel the heat in the air today, with a hot wind sweeping through. The rain never did come. It was summer fruits today as our warm-up still life.  Oranges are seemingly simple but need a touch of blue to give them roundness.  Leaving white edges on the light side gives depth. Visiting today was Adeline, who […]
