Travelling North.2.

December 31, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Leaving Taupo, our next destination is Havelock North. Everywhere you look it’s bursting with vineyards, all well known if you’re a wine buff. Cafes, galleries, restaurants and boutiques line the streets which span from the central roundabout. Time to find our B&B for the next 2 nights, and after driving seemingly a long way into the country, past the grazing sheep and cows, we find the bougainvillaea gates to Havelock House. This is downtime for us. To be up to […]

Sunset Sketching. China, Mannequins and The Artichoke

November 22, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

After a 3 week break we had an excited group of sketchers along to tonight’s Sunset sketching class. With two tables set up in the studio, students could choose mannequins or a quaint still life of china. It’s a good time to remind ourselves that we can just have fun with this, it’s only a sketch, an experience, capturing an impression, a moment in time…just enjoy the process…and then turn the page… Mannequins were measured out and coloured and painted, […]

Our First Sketching at Sunset Series Completed

October 24, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 23 ’13 Hello’ it’s Christy here, and it’s Wednesday night “Sunset Sketching Class”. Our diligent 4 arrived and wondered what we were going to be sketching tonight, and then saw the white board with a beautiful demonstration from Erin, on how to approach sketching people. So you guessed it, tonight’s sketch was going to be each other and later, people at the café. On board this evening, we also had the wonderful company of Vivianne, one of our […]

When The Sun Goes Down, The Sketchers Come Out

October 10, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Wednesday Oct 9 ’13 It’s really very sunny when Christy and I arrive a little earlier than our first Wednesday evening Sketch class is to start . When people arrive we make our introductions and offer a nice cuppa tea. A good time to talk about our Travel Sketch Kit. We travel mean and light – and fast! Because tonight we have first time sketchers,  we have a simple mug and leaf still life. It’s very forgiving. Need more leaves? […]

Sketching at Sunset. Evening Classes.

August 21, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Once we have daylight saving, from early October, and we have those gorgeous long evenings –  then we begin our Sketching at SunsetEvening classes. Starting on Tuesday October 8, and Wednesday October 9, we are doing an easy 3 week course. So you have a class every week on the day you’ve picked. These are just right for busy people who can’t get to the day classes, but still want to be sketching when they can, and learn how it’s […]

The Importance of the Dining Table

January 6, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

I’ve been having some interesting conversations lately about this subject…. We are having such beautiful evenings of late. It is warm and the aroma of scented flowers wafts in the air. We don’t eat till later now with daylight saving, so there’s nothing nicer than sitting on the outdoor seating watching the sun slowly go down. This sketch was done as the sky and sea were changing from bright colour and becoming pale and smokey. The middle distance hills were […]

Midnight. NYE Sydney 2012

New Year’s Eve Sydney

January 2, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Not a black line in sight. Pure watercolour sketch. It’s too impossible for me to watch fireworks and sketch. I’m sure there’s a way, and if there is I’ll try to find it. So from my photo reference I present Sydney exploding at Midnight Dec 31 2012. It was a fantastic display – as it always is – and I hope I’ve captured here something of the essence of the night. ©ErinHill2013

Delwood Beach below us

Summer at the Beach. NYE.

December 31, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

The colours in the water at little Delwood beach are quite remarkable. This is summer at it’s best. Swimming is a must when you see these colours, and for me a sketch as well. I’m pleased for people who work hard all year and only have this time as their holiday. On a day like this you go for breakfast at a seaside cafe. You walk a little further at a leisurely pace. You wonder in amazement at ones rushing […]

Pale Moon

Pale Moon

November 17, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

I intended to show some sketches from our class visit to a very wet Cockatoo Island, but haven’t had a chance to tidy up the work for you. However for something that’s nothing to do with the above – I did a little lightening up of this little square acrylic recently, and now I’m happy with it. One thinks late afternoon skies will happen more easily on canvas than they actually do. After 3 attempts I now have more of […]
