By George! Our New Sketching Term Starts Jolly Soon

April 18, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

Pardon the pun, but we’re just so excited today. The young Royals are visiting Manly. Kate, William and baby by George. However let us not be distracted a minute longer as there are things you need to know. Do you like the idea of discovering parts of Manly you didn’t know existed? Would you like to try a different Manly cafe every week? Then you’d better sign up to our Out&about Sketch Classes – beginners to Advanced – at ErinHill Studio. All the […]

The big Birthday, Sweet Sugar Lounge & Creating a Travel Sketching Journal with Alissa. Whew.

August 24, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY AUGUST 22 ’13 Oooh a chilly day. Blue skies for a while, but warm clothes the order of the day. But our subject for this week is very special and brings sunshiny smiles. One of our sketcher girls has turned 70. So to celebrate every class will be sketching birthday cakes and tarts. We won’t see Birthday Barb till tomorrow but at least everyone this week can share the fun in advance. Sketching only of course. No nibbling! Yet. […]

Thurs. Oct 25. Sketching ourselves

Portraits & Streetscapes

October 27, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

Oct 25,26,27th ’12 Another week with some fun and challenging subjects……. THURSDAY OCT 25 ’12 Not a still life in sight. Whatever will we sketch then! The answer – each other. The idea is to sketch whoever is nearby, so you are not staring at each other. This also means people will hold that position till their own sketch is done.  One cannot take this personally as you’ll discover. We just want the shape and character of whoever we are sketching. Some […]

Underpainting for major work

For my upcoming Exhibition

January 29, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

I need a very large painting on the main wall as you enter the exhibition. Did I mention my Bather’s Pavilion Exhibition in March & April? Well it’s 2 years since my last one already! So this 1metre square piece will do the honours. Not in it’s present state of course. This is the scrubbed on colour only. Yet to follow when I get a moment – between moving house,  Nic & Adrian’s Fiesta Wedding & Term 1 Sketch Classes […]

Colour Texture X 3

Bright Colour, Rich Texture

May 30, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

I’d had these 3 canvases for awhile. Each had a very textured base I’d created with gesso and scrunched up paper. My plan had been to create a series of 3 which would hang together. But being me I’d not followed that idea, but done contemporary compositions in everything from pure colour, to gelato ones. Each was interesting but didn’t really make it on their own or as a group. So – even though I’d prepared 2 other new canvases, […]

The Tide Comes In

The Tide Comes In

March 15, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

I am very fond of soft edged and pale colours at the moment. Awhile back I did some mixed media with texture colour and stencils. These I felt were a step on the way to something else, but not sure what. I took this 20 X 24” canvas the other day and gessoed it top to bottom. One of my sketches of rocks and water kept stopping me whenever I flipped past it. I liked the composition – a good […]

Manly and Shelley Beaches

Manly and Shelley Beaches

December 29, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

Pen over acrylic layers. 30 X 20 inches. This is a view I keep coming back to. I wanted to experiment with layers of acrylic on 300gsm paper and then draw in black line. I tend to go with a scene I’m familiar with when trying out stuff.  So I started this before Christmas, and worked a little at a time when I could be in the Studio. I’m trying to think where I want to head with my work […]

Friend from around the world all collected on my pinboard.

My Pinboard Friends

August 20, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

Last week I painted the cork  white – as if you’d see it now anyway. Then out came my special collection of bits and pieces I’ve saved which inspire me, and which had been in boxes because I’ve had nowhere for them. I have cards from Glenys based on her superb South African paintings. A set of Tuscan illustrative cards I’ve always like the style of. A mad series of Paris postcards of the Eiffel Tower as crazy paintings. Some […]

Milo the Cat in Paris – The Sketches

July 28, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

These are the sketches of Milo in different positions. I have a few photos taken the day we visited his loft apartment in Paris so that was of great help. He is quite a ‘grand chat’ so I’m trying to show his true proportions! These are the sketches shown in the 8 ‘Milo the Cat in Paris’ series. Come join us in Paris on our Travel Sketching week, and learn to create your own sketch journal of  special places and […]
