Manly Impressions

Exhibiting at Raglan Gallery, one of our Sketchers.

April 19, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

What a great show. Karen is one of our sketchers, and had made mention that she’d had some work accepted at Raglan Gallery, one of the best galleries in Manly. Known for some excellent contemporary works, glass and ceramics. But that had been some time back. Then she rang to say her work was in a ‘small paintings’ show opening on Friday night. Of course I’d go. This is a huge achievement. To have paintings accepted to start with and […]

French Window to Sydney

French Window, Line & Acrylic

October 9, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

Something purely decorative. Just for the pure pleasure of putting bright colour and black line into a fun painting. I never tire of dreaming as I look beyond any French Window to any lovely vista before me. May we always have our dreams. Available now in my SHOP. ©ErinHill2012

MCA & Biennale

Sketching at MCA

July 6, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

We’re on Term break, so some of us decided to grab a bit of ‘culture’ with a visit to the MCA and Biennale. There is a fab new wing so the 4 levels now spread between old and new, not that you are aware once trying to figure out some of the artwork. We were very keen to check out Lee Mingwei and ‘The Mending Project’. Such a fascinating project and idea. You can see all the big cotton reels […]

Yellow Daisies

Yellow Daisies – a decorative acrylic

September 24, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

A little bit French. But of course. If you think you’ve seen this painting from me before – well you have –  and you haven’t! This is a textured canvas I’d created when I first had a go at some mixed media acrylics awhile back. Since then it’s probably had at least 5 paintings on top of the first one. Can you believe I’d done 3 of these very textured canvases!  I simply couldn’t feel happy with any of them, […]

Colour Texture X 3

Bright Colour, Rich Texture

May 30, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

I’d had these 3 canvases for awhile. Each had a very textured base I’d created with gesso and scrunched up paper. My plan had been to create a series of 3 which would hang together. But being me I’d not followed that idea, but done contemporary compositions in everything from pure colour, to gelato ones. Each was interesting but didn’t really make it on their own or as a group. So – even though I’d prepared 2 other new canvases, […]

Mixed Media - More Manly Moments

Mixed Media – Fresh off the Easel

February 18, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

This is like being at Yoga. Breathe deeply and let go. Painting is like that too. You can get so tight and labour the work till you can’t find that wonderful spontaneity and freshness. So I let go, and did something with lovely pure colour and simply let the design find itself. Once again I used pieces from my sketches to create a story, then worked the colours and textures to connect the parts. So much fun and […]

Mixed Media 1

And now for Something Completely Different

February 11, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

Mixed Media. I loved doing this. It’s about moments in time. It’s about feelings. It’s about colour. Mixed Media 1 –  is the building block. Glazed pieces of my sketches and texture from paper napkins painted in Acrylic Medium and some lines dragged through the thickest areas for effect. Mixed Media 2 –  now has clear  bright colour added – acrylic – painted wherever I feel like it.  Then come decisions about how much and which colour where. Once I’d […]

The Invitation

Vicki Grace – Meditations – Exhibition

December 4, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

This lovely invitation shows details from Vicki Grace’s newest paintings. The show is being held in her own studio in Newtown, Sydney. It’s a large old converted warehouse, with huge wall space and perfect for the large works that Vicki produces. I loved that she is using quite strong colour combinations for this show, but counter balanced with more muted ones. As she says ‘ Yin & yang’. Vicki paints emotions. A keen yoga person, she regularly trots off to […]

Opening at Gallery8, Sydney

Women Artists Worth Seeing

September 8, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

It’s funny how things work out. I’d seen Galleryeight on ‘Art Forum’ and liked the sound of the people, the venue, the Artists they are attracting, and decided it might be a Gallery I’d like to show in myself. There was an Opening happening on Tuesday night so Milton and I decided to attend. It’s in the historic part of Sydney town right next door to the oldest hotel which is a tourist attraction in itself. It’s not a big […]
