From my Window

From my Window

September 13, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

New work. Watercolour and line. Completed today. I have a ‘thing’ for French windows. It’s that possibility of turning an ordinary view into something extraordinary. I love to have some personal things on the sill, and then take you to what’s beyond. It could be Sydney, Paris or a brick wall. But looking out through French windows makes it magic. ©ErinHill2012

1 Almond, 2 Blueberry Friands

Sketch then Taste. Cake Sketching

July 30, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

I’m doing a bit more food & wine sketching these days. On this particular day I sat in the sun at a beachside cafe and ordered 2 friands. Love them. Nice size. Not too sweet. Oh and a fab coffee. I had planned to sketch them. I was taking my caffein hit as I observed these 2 little golden friands sitting on a plate enjoying the sun. First was the blueberry one, then the almond, but hang on – 2 […]

A Paris Sketch from 2008

December 5, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

Another of some sketches I’d done when staying with Joanna in Paris. We stayed in this tiny 7th floor studio before moving to Beaumarchais the following week, and where we’d be for a month or so. I wasn’t paying much attention to sketching at this time, and did only a few – which I now regret. Instead I concentrated on watercolours which I’d work on most days. I now see sketching as being a most wonderful way to express myself […]

Green Shutters & Still Life

Green Shutters with added Still Life

October 19, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

I knew there was something not quite complete about ‘Green Shutters 1’. The thing I like about having work hanging in the Studio, is that sometimes you know something needs doing but don’t know what. Everything has been moved around now that the Exhibition is over and sold paintings gone. So it was a chance to see it in another position. I’m perfectly happy to hang paintings which may not be my favourite – at that stage and observe them. I’d […]

White Daisies French Window

White Daisies, French Window

September 30, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

I actually have a painting partly done, which has been abandoned in my excitement at producing these textured canvas decoratives. Now there three. No longer hidden away unresolved. Now transformed. Very colourful. Very simple compositions. Seem to be working well and a style I’m enjoying. I just have a watercolour to do of St Roch Garden in Trausse. This one from my reference. Then back to the abandoned sea and rocks acrylic.  Maybe then some changes to two other paintings […]

Blue Anenomes, French Window

Blue Anenomes, French Window

September 28, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

The second wrinkly textured canvas has been completed. They seem to happening more easily now that I have some ideas in my head about the style I want. Definitely liking the French influence as well as creating a view into the painting. The two look quite good together too. Yellow Daisies and Blue Anenomes. Still a third canvas coming up for it’s turn – that’s going to be a Balmoral one. You can see I’m beginning to pay attention to […]

Tropical Manly - decorative

Tropical Manly

September 1, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

‘Tropical Manly’ is the last one to be completed before the exhibition Opening on Saturday. I have hung the groups in their varying styles, which I prefer, rather than mixing them all around. Because I have location sketches, Watercolours, decorative Acrylics and major acrylics – they look best if grouped sort of together. Other artists will know how tricky the hanging part is. I started a couple of days back, lived with it, then changed about a bit – and […]

White Dove

White Dove

August 4, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

As you can see, this is an incredibly textured canvas. I wasn’t happy with the previous painting on it, so gessoed over it and started a new painting. I was keen to do another ‘window’ so worked out a composition which would be busy, and work with all the added texture. I could have called it ‘Red Tulips’ but it was too obvious, and I was liking the soft dove on the window sill, so it’s named after him. Slowly […]

Blue Vase

Blue Vase

July 30, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

I’ve always loved the use of French windows and doorways to look beyond, and into a painting. Been ages since I’ve done any but I seem to be headed that way now. This is another of my 12” square canvases which spoke to me. It said ‘Have a go at a familiar local scene, and wrap a French window round it.’ ‘Ok’  I said  ‘Why not, I think it’s time to add to the decorative mood I seem to be […]
