Comment fait-on pour aller á l’aéroport?

September 1, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

Sketch&French 9.30am Monday September 1 ’14. Not a spot of rain to be seen. In fact a lovely bright and clear Spring morning Just a small class with another of our S&F being unwell. So today we would learn about getting around and asking the way. We talked about buying tickets to the airport, getting buses, getting the metro Sandrine had questions ready for us to ask and answer, and she doesn’t slow down. That’s the way you’ll hear the language […]

Anzac Day Sketching – or Don’t Rain on my Parade

April 26, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

FRIDAY APRIL 26 2014 Do you remember that fab song by Barbra Streisand?  From the 1964 musical ‘Funny Girl’.  Surely. It seemed so right for today and I love all the words. Don’t rain on my parade. Well it did. But it did not dampen anyone’s spirits.   Anyway, Karen and I had planned to go sketching with Sydney Sketch Club, at the Memorial Pool in front of the Cenotaph in Hyde Park. Let’s also say that a few decided to […]

Getaway to the South Coast. March ’14

March 19, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

Our Getaways are 3 day/2night Sketching Holidays. Usually just a few hours from Sydney. DAY 1. SUNDAY MARCH 16TH. We’ve been getting excited as the time drew near to go south of Sydney on our South Coast Getaway. We would all meet at 10am about 2 hrs drive South of Sydney at Berkeleow’s Bookbarn. It’s been there for years. An early Dutch family lived on a Southern Highlands farm and just happened to be passionate about collecting books. The barn […]

Sketching Workshop Taupo New Zealand

December 14, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 11 ’13 Taupo is an enormous and very deep lake, in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand. Surrounded by little settlements and a main town centre, one of the big attractions is the mountains for skiing and trout fishing. When you arrive from the south, it tempts and taunts you as the road dips down to the cold blue water lapping on pumice shores, then takes you back through the forest before leading you back […]

Jasmine, Bushfires, Garbage and Cake

October 19, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY OCTOBER 17 ’13 I smell bush fires. A hint of jasmine. Odd mix. The Rainbow Lorikeets squeak with joy as they hang upside down looking for sweet pollen in red bottlebrush tree outside. I open the door to see them and that’s when my nose does a double twitch as the smell of bushfires fills the air. The sky is a threatening salmon pink. The Blue Mountains are on fire. But we must press on. Off to see everyone […]

Let’s get Sketching. At home at Daku Resort

September 28, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Sunday Sept 15 ’13 A cup of tea  on the balcony as the sun rises is a perfect start to the day. It’s not possible to be uptight in Fiji. You can try but it won’t happen. That’s a city thing. I’m not sure I’ll need my watch. Breakfast is a relaxed meeting time and everyone slowly appears. The choice of fresh fruit all grown locally looks beautiful and tastes even more so. Papaya grows all over Savusavu and we […]

Eye levels, Bricks and Stuffed Peacocks

July 27, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY JULY 25 ’13 We love our outdoor sketching, and capturing all the places we like in our own way. However I decided that good old fashioned perspective is something many people are bamboozled by. So in our second week we introduced a serious look at how it works. On the whiteboard is a simple shape showing eye level, and vanishing points going 2 ways. That could be sketched into your book so you can refer back to it. On […]

Sketching Together

July 26, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

A couple of sketches done recently, with Jeanette from country Victoria and Vivianne, one of our effervescent tutors. One in line and watercolour, the other in line and watercolour pencil. Sketching together is so enjoyable. The coffee order placed, then the silence as we sketch away at whatever is around us. We were on the ferry to Sydney together, just Jeanette and I as part of her Sketch & Stay week. This was quite a highlight for her. To think […]

Lunch at Ciao Belli Cafe

The Seagull and Me

May 7, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

A very nice day again. Decided to pop in to Ciao Belli Cafe, sit quietly in the sun, and sketch. Flavia brought me a delicious Greek Salad and I settled into the seat with a seaside view. St Patrick’s sits high on the hill above the wharf. The Norfolk pines framed the setting. Looked like a sketch to me. Not a soul around so it seemed more like my own place, unlike weekends when we share Manly with all the […]
