Waves over Rocks

Acrylic with a touch of line

July 11, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

I liked the way the sea is a deeper colour, and waves come crashing over the rock ledge and over into the shallower rock shelf. I do love these rock water combos, and because it’s where I walk every day, I like to observe the colours and try to use those in my paintings. This painting is done in acrylic but I’ve used a touch of black line as well. It’s based on an original sketch which I keep going […]

Happy Open Day in the Studio

January 27, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

It was after all Australia Day! But many interested people happily left their sausage on the BBQ to come and see us and find out about sketching classes.   Joanna was keen to have helium balloons for our festive opening. So we had a couple of bright bouquets of them inside and out. I myself me – made apple and cinnamon muffins which people seemed happy to try! I assure you I am not known for these previously unheard of […]

Blank Canvas – back in the Studio

January 4, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

I thought seeing as everyone else is back at work today, I should be too. The family were off on Ocean World adventures, so Amelie and I went to the Studio, to see how it felt in 2011. It was good. We liked it.  But it does mean that my exhibition which last week was 2 yrs away, is suddenly closer to 1 year away!! I must have at least 30 to 40 works for that. I wouldn’t put anything […]

Amelie helps with the big Art decisions

August 18, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

It’s good to have someone to talk to when you are deciding what to paint next. Should I start that Cafe de Flore one or should I get onto the half finished stack?  Or to heck with it all and  go drawing somewhere. This is where Amelie our Shi-itzu. Now 9 years of age and a very supportive companion, comes in. She always gives me her views. Never complains, never answers back, and listens politely if a painting is going […]

Studio Drawings

August 12, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

Today was a Studio day. Sunny and bright and I was keen to do some more on my first acrylic in the style I did of Twin Bridges at Cosi Ponte in Italy. But I’ll show you those next time. I did some little sketches of the new bench with under shelving, plus all the stuff on it and in it. Actually not putting shelves up above the bench on the wall now. I have enough room below. So that […]

Studio coming along, but will it work to share?

August 4, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

The track system is now up so have stacked the walls with everything formerly on the floor. Managed to get that olive/grey wall done so that the white track would sit nicely at the top, and I wouldn’t have to paint around it. The whole studio looks so fresh and bright. People are stopping to come and see what I’m doing now. The front window shows from the street as cars go by, so it’s obvious that it’s an art […]

Amelie Guards the Studio

July 26, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

Things are making progress. Yesterday I painted the grey wall white – 1st coat. The picture hanging system is coming on Tuesday, so getting the walls ready was a good thing to do on a Sunday.  The bench top is being made so should be here soon. Cardboard cartons are my saviour. Today was sunny and cheerful so everything looked welcoming for our good friends Dale and Gilly and Yvonne. They seemed suitably impressed and even spent $ on cards […]

Studio Takes Shape

July 16, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

I just love it already. No running water yet. No shelving or storage yet. No work tables yet.  Nothing on the walls yet. All coming soon. However the important thing was to establish that this studio is taking shape. There are paintings on easels in the window and a box of  greeting cards. This establishes what I do. The windows have been cleaned and I’ve polished up the dull old brass door handle and street numbers. But the coffee is […]

My New Studio

July 11, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

Things have been happening. Since returning from France and Italy I have realised that I want a place to paint in, spread out, walk away. leave paints where they are, paint early, paint late…… etc. I’ve always had space for all this in the houses we’ve lived in. But then we downsized to our gorgeous townhouse by the harbour. That has been fine for smaller works but now I want to go bigger and messier and explore other mediums and […]
