Pink Harbour

Pink Harbour

May 24, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

Here I go again with the knocked back colour, lost edges and calming subject. I love it when people feel happy when they look at my work. They actually say that. I also like a painting you can keep going back to,  remembering something from your past. A boat ride, a tree shape, a bird call, a walk with a friend. You can live forever with a painting like that. Glenys was very helpful with this one. I was certainly […]

The Potter's Cat by Glenys Cullimore

The Potter’s Cat

May 20, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

It’s been a good productive week in the Studio. A real flurry of action.Lots of painting going on. We’ve also squeezed in ‘The Archibald’ exhibition at AGNW and ‘Salon des Refuses’ at SH Ervin Gallery, The Bathers this morning – where we exhibit next year, plus some great teas and coffees. Glenys has been working with me while she’s here and already has this one – ‘Le chat de Potiers’ –  complete, and another virtually done. We still have a few […]

Daylight Artist’s lamp for Autumn days

May 17, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

Now that it’s Autumn, days cam be a little less bright.Time to switch on the new Daylight Lamp. I was very lucky that the Australian Sales Rep for The Daylight Company, happens to pass my Studio quite often. Pierre-Louis called in one day and in his charming Paris accent, showed me the product and  asked  if I’d like to try one. Just see what I thought. Give it a whirl. Test drive it. Oh okay then. Twist my arm a […]

Blank Canvas – back in the Studio

January 4, 2011 by Erin Hill Sketching

I thought seeing as everyone else is back at work today, I should be too. The family were off on Ocean World adventures, so Amelie and I went to the Studio, to see how it felt in 2011. It was good. We liked it.  But it does mean that my exhibition which last week was 2 yrs away, is suddenly closer to 1 year away!! I must have at least 30 to 40 works for that. I wouldn’t put anything […]

Manly Corso - completed

Manly Corso – completed

October 27, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

I’ve been doing little bits at a time on ‘Manly Corso’ and I’ve decided it’s done. Can you see my seagulls? And that funny little dog is Amelie – sort of.  I’ve lifted the colour,  and added people birds and dogs. An enormous amount goes on here but I’ve put in enough not to be distracting.  I love public spaces like this where people promenade and meet. Everyone loves people watching. From this week we now have 2 of us […]

A little bit of Venice

October 9, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

I didn’t know I was going to do the painting Venice next. It was the small reference sketch on my pinboard which caught my eye as I was thinking about the next painting. My head must still be in Italy, as it often is. Well why not. I obviously liked this view or I wouldn’t have done the sketch and pinned it up on the pinboard. So that was it. Time to start.  Out with the biggest 300gsm  pad and […]

Re paint ‘View from Cordati’s Studio’ Barga, Tuscany

September 21, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

Just to show that I do paint more than just beaches, rocks and water!  The smaller painting up on the easel is the oil I did the day we were at Bruno Cordati’s studio in Barga. I hadn’t used oils for years so it was a challenge spreading my colours out and not mixing them together and getting mud. I did of course. It’s unfinished – because they take too long to dry for me. But I had blocked in […]

Acrylic Layering – Part 1

August 13, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

Take a very large Arches Aquarelle 300gsm block (20 removable sheets bonded) tape the edges and paint every which way with gesso. Leave it till the next day. Apply thin watered down acrylic, any colour with a big brush. Let dry before another colour is applied and same for another colour if you want more. I used blue, yellow red. Took a day and night. When it was really dry I used my graphite stick to do a loose indication […]
