Sketching People in Action

February 22, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY 10am Class. FEBRUARY 20 ’14 Good morning to those who joined us in the early group this Thursday. When walking in the door, seeing the mannequins on the table, some wanted to walk straight back out again! Just teasing, I know sketching people can seem a little daunting, but as soon as you commit to your sketches, you soon discover it’s like sketching anything else, and it’s a matter of shapes and proportions. We have a new person today, […]

Little Nau-nau on guard outside St Frock

Urban Sketching at Pyrmont

January 12, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

This is Liz and Alissa’s baby. A get together of passionate sketchers who would rather do this than anything else. With my brand new sample sketchbook from Stillman & Birn, I hit the streets. The word was it’d be 40+ degrees again, so from Liz was, only come if you are keen So that’s a definite. ‘Yes’ for me. I sketch in any weather as do most of the others. This is an early part of Sydney established for workers […]

Sydney Hobart Boxing Day start

Sydney Hobart Race

December 27, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

This is one of the biggest yachting races in the Southern hemisphere. Every Boxing Day yachts as small as 30 metres and up to Super Maxis compete on a 3 day dash from Sydney to Hobart in Tasmania. We didn’t get the Christmas day rain but we sure as heck had a huge southerly buster. Every year these adventurous folk get themselves into all weather gear, and hit the ocean to work themselves day and night till they arrive in […]

Quick sketches at the Opera House

Sketches – Australian Ballet rehearsal

November 15, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

I was delighted to accompany Grace, my 9 yr old great niece, to a production the Australian Ballet puts on for young people. The barre is set up on stage in the smaller of the 2 performance halls at the Sydney Opera House. At least 30 -40 male and female dancers are going through the same warmup routines they do every day. Only this time it’s on a stage, with a pianist playing in the wings. The ballet master is […]

International Sketchcrawl Sydney

July 15, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

I don’t very often get pictures of myself sketching. It’s usually me on the end of the camera, so thank you Jennifer from Sydney Sketchclub. That’s Elaine from class there too. Jenny was somewhere nearby and Ethna wasn’t well so hope she sees this. It’s so lovely that some of our class feel they can now go sketching with the best. Alissa was there  – who came sketching toys with the class and shared her talents that day recently. I […]

Boating Club houses Manly

Boating Club Houses

April 6, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

Went to see how close one could get to the yachts moored on the bay. The class would be doing a nautical theme this week as one of the girls is a sailor. I try to pick subjects which the sketchers relate to. We would start with the Manly ferry while it was at the wharf for 10 mins, then do something similar to above. Decided it wasn’t working to go right onto the club houses so stood here by […]

Desert at Bather's Pavilion with friends

A Very Sketchable Dessert

March 17, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

It was a most delightful evening with two dedicated Sketcher friends. I’m talking SERIOUSLY dedicated. Every day a sketch or 3. International Symposiums. Sketching kit always in their handbags. You see what I mean!! Guess who forgot hers!! This was Alissa and Liz who hadn’t seen my exhibition at Bather’s Pavilion. We’d therefore decided to make a night of it which we surely did. It was so wonderful having such intense conversation about every possible aspect of sketching. How it differs […]

Underpainting for major work

For my upcoming Exhibition

January 29, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

I need a very large painting on the main wall as you enter the exhibition. Did I mention my Bather’s Pavilion Exhibition in March & April? Well it’s 2 years since my last one already! So this 1metre square piece will do the honours. Not in it’s present state of course. This is the scrubbed on colour only. Yet to follow when I get a moment – between moving house,  Nic & Adrian’s Fiesta Wedding & Term 1 Sketch Classes […]

Colour Intense Sketch

January 5, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

I’m trying some serious colour for a new series of sketches. Done on 300gsm Aquarelle Arches. Good solid strong colour. Mask off the area and get the acrylic paint ready. Because I’m looking through my sketches for good compositions I don’t need to do any drawing or indications on the paper at all. I like to keep a real spontaneity about my work especially if it’s not the first time I’ve done a subject. Then it’s a matter of blocking […]
