Sketch&Lunch-Vietnamese

November 3, 2017 by Erin Hill Sketching

This month our Sketch&Lunch was held in Cabramatta featuring Vietnamese food. It was a rare scorcher of a day, and things certainly heated up in the markets! I took our students to one of the older more authentic cafes for a Ca Phe Sua Da (Vietnamese iced coffee). Here we sketched Vietnamese herbs. We tasted , touched and smelt them first, then leant what the Vietnamese names were for them. Next we headed to Eastland Supermarket where my friend Thai […]

Term 3, Week 8. Bikes and Sketching our days…

September 11, 2017 by Erin Hill Sketching

What a gorgeous week we had. Out and about, sketching bikes and for the general classes, sketching our days, learning new skills around journalling and telling a story with our sketches. Manly Tuesday General This week it’s all about travel vignettes. How to capture small snapshots of a place, small details that help describe what you see and experience. We talked about page layout and the impact of white space on the page. Lovely work, you’ve definitely told the Manly […]

June 17, 2017 by Erin Hill Sketching

Welcome to a wonderful new week of sketching again. Anna from the Blue Mountains branch reporting whilst Erin is in France, leading her joy filled Erin Hill Sketch Holidays. First class of the week was in the crisp Blue mountains. Tuesday New Sketchers class. This week was about seeing everyday objects with our new sketchers eyes. We headed to The Hydro Majestic in Medlow Bath for spectacular views and a spacious cafe. There’s a rattan bike hanging on the wall, […]

Kuala Lumpur Sketch Workshop2

May 13, 2017 by Erin Hill Sketching

EHS TRAVEL SKETCHING WORKSHOP. KUALA LUMPUR. MAY 6 ’17 On Saturday 06 May another small group of intrepid sketchers began their sketching journey with me at an Introductory Travel Sketching Workshop. We  began as usual with page planning, looking for shapes and learning to layer our colours. Luckily, I found some wonderful bright red hibiscus, Malaysia’s National flower, outside a neighbour’s home which the owner happily allowed me to pick. (The rain of late has ruined my usual roadside freebies!) […]

General Intensive.Aug 21. Streets & People

August 25, 2016 by Erin Hill Sketching

General Intensive: ‘Street Scenes & People’ Manly pulled out all the stops and produced an absolute corker of a day for us to sketch happy crowds flowing out of the ferry terminal. Family groups walking along the esplanade, canoodling couples lying on the lawn, even a TV filming actors who were rather hopeless at kayaking-  we sketched them all! In the studio, we learnt a few tricks to ‘fudge’ a crowd and add the human element to sketches to help add atmosphere, […]

Sketching in Trausse this week

July 24, 2016 by Erin Hill Sketching

Tuesday July 19 ’16.  This week Paul is becoming much more confident with his sketching and looking forward to more challenges. He’s been doing a lot of homework so is very motivated. Today we have Rose joining us, now that she’s had her first lesson in observation and colour, she’s keen to see how today will go. Our warmup sketch were the ripening grapes hanging low above our Studio table, and which you can bump your head on. We looked […]

Sketching Week3 Term1. Sea Sand & people

February 13, 2016 by Erin Hill Sketching

So what were we up to this week in Sketching? More enjoyment than you’ve ever had!! That’s because you are succeeding. New Sketchers were doing sailing and the sea. Learning to capture a still life, work to a time limit and use limited colour. The work produced is quite amazing. These are people who so afraid of making a ‘mistake’ a week or so back. and who are now confident enough to sketch what you see below. Your tutors are very […]

Sketching Books and Stories.

October 19, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

Tuesday Class. October 14 ’14 We’re into the second week of term, and our class is swelling in size and enthusiasm. We’ve all arrived a bit early, and are very keen to get started. Today we’re looking at a stack of rather old books. Some of my favourites are piled here, such as “The Water Babies” and even an old dictionary. Old book covers can make interesting and characterful sketches! It doesn’t take long before the penny drops that we’re […]

More Under the Tuscan Sun

September 23, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

Saturday September 20 ’14 Some even set their alarms to be out of the house by 8.15am!  We were going by train to Lucca, and we couldn’t be late.  Our yummy breakfast was taken a little earlier, but somehow we managed to all be ready, even remembering our sketching gear. The whistle of the train as it approaches the little country station and even those with various hip and knee replacements, pull themselves up those high steps onto the train. […]
