Sketch&French. Week 4. 9.30am Monday August 11 2014. We were missing one person today but we had no less fun.  Today Sandrine would help us to book a restaurant, and how to order from the menu. She had kindly made a very informative sheet on how to say everything, and we could role play, and make a booking.  We also learned what ‘ Sorry we are full’ would sound like! There was a wonderful menu on another sheet, from one […]

Sketching Steps & Escape Stairs

August 9, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

New Sketchers. 10am Tuesday August 5’14. It’s a sunny day, which means it must be our sketching day! We always seem to land on the lucky lottery with weather for our ‘New Sketchers group’.  We have a full house today, and I’m delighted to have Karen and Toni on board to observe and help with the tutoring for this large group. The setups this week continue to look more challenging than the last. We’re focusing on ‘stairways’ and we have […]

Saturday Sketch Workshop with Judy. July 26th

July 28, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

‘LETTING GO WITH YOUR SKETCHING & WATERCOLOUR’ Workshop with Judy. I had been very busy planning our first workshop this term and had plenty in store for those unsuspecting sketchers. We all met in Nominom, a shocking pink building on the beachfront, easy to spot from a mile away.  The owner was most obliging as he had put together some tables for us upstairs and it was a truly colourful place to be, like having our own psychedelic studio by […]

Sketching Teacups & Terrace Houses

May 12, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

This week’s posting comes to you from Toulouse in the South of France. Our girls Painting/Sketching week in our French Village has just come to a close. Sniff sniff. So now we are about to head to Boston. Your tutors have done a marvellous job this week and all the words and pics have flown via the cloud to my little MacAir. Well almost. I seem to missing some teacups but I’m sure you’ll forgive me. Anyway, on with the […]

Early Easter Sketching Week

April 5, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY APRIL 3 ’14  –  GROUP 1 “Hello, its Christy here” and our first group of sketchers are arriving, excited to see what is in store for them today. Easter is in store for us, wrapped up in bows and foil, with chubby cheeked bunnies and cute little chicks. We sketched two lovely Easter themed still lives in the studio today. We talked about how to make good use of the chinograph when we are sketching ‘shiny’ objects like […]

Sketching Scandinavian

March 8, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY 10am MARCH 6 ’14 The clouds parted and the sun came out for our class today, and though we had a smaller class than usual, we then had double the fun! To get the ball rolling, we had a little sketching exercise where we borrowed a sketch from our dear friend Picasso and turned it upside down and sketched, the lines and form, and saw what it looked like when you turned it back right side up again. This […]

Start With Your Eye Level

March 1, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY FEB 27 10am class Week 4 begins. We didn’t believe it was going to rain. Reports for days said it would. I like to look at the sky and clouds and work it out myself. It might matter a teeny bit if we got rain because we’re doing perspective from a high pathway, looking down over rooftops and beyond. But of course we would first start in the Studio  with our warm sketches of Frenchboxes and building blocks. We talked […]

Shells, Canal Houses & Sushi at Sunset

December 5, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

It was a full class tonight, with most students already set up and sketching at 6.30pm. Seems everyone had been looking forward to doing our shell and Dutch canal house sketching since last week.. Cathy questioned whether she should sketch a canal house, seeing as she had done so while she was actually IN Amsterdam on a recent trip…but she ended up doing a very nice sketch anyway…and we all admired the pictures on the wrapping of the chocolates she […]

Square-on Architecture

November 9, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 7. 2013 Our classes are planned so that we cover as many everyday situations as you might run into when out  & about sketching. Architecture is one subject you’d be hard pressed to avoid in almost any place you’d be visiting. Today we are looking at the shorthand version of perspective. In fact by standing square on to your subject you get the main characteristics without wondering how to deal with the disappearing parts. We have some tiny […]
