Sunday Workshop. People Faces and Figures

April 24, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Sunday April 22 ’18 A smaller group this time due to some last minute postponements, but great for those who attended. We’d be doing a lot of looking at shape, page planning and use of simple colour, with as few as 3 colours. One of our more experienced sketchers took the chance to refresh this particular class and was delighted with the results. All out sketchers let go and had that pen racing around the page making delicious shapes and […]

Sketch&lunch-Malaysian

March 2, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

February was Malaysian Sketch&Lunch. We had a ball in Chinatown, Sydney. The Nasi Lemak at Ho Jiak (a relatively new Malaysian streetfood restaurant on Hay St) was absolutely delicious! The wagu beef rendang was to die for so was the the Char Kway Teow (a rice noodle dish with king prawns and the “breath of the wok”) We ate with relish whilst learning to sketch ellipses and capturing the cups of tea and coffee Malaysian style. Next we headed out […]

ErinHill Sketching. Discovery Day at North Head Manly

January 21, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Discovery Day. NorthHead Project. January 21 ’18. Erin Hill Sketchers   Our spot on the map – No 15 –  and the special sign on the dusty pathway said our sketchers would be at Cemetery No 3. The temperatures were due to reach 30C but luckily did not in fact. So finding shade meant we were comfortable. While folk were doing tours with the very knowledgeable volunteers, they could ask us about sketching and how we capture a moment quickly. […]

Week9 Term4. Nature’s Bounty

December 9, 2017 by Erin Hill Sketching

Week 9 and what a gorgeous week for nature and colour. New Sketchers were looking at Intrinsic shape in fruit and veggies. General students were trying out the many ways of capturing the beauty of the bloom. Some gorgeous results. MANLY TUESDAY GENERAL DEC 5 ’17 We almost turned the studio into a florist today. Lots of gorgeous blooms to inspire but first a review of watercolor techniques, layering washes, wet on wet, and aquarelles for definition. So many creative […]

Sketching Week 6. Term 4 ’15. Cottage Flowers and Gardens

November 14, 2015 by Erin Hill Sketching

Week 6 has been a challenging one for New Sketchers and a beautiful one for General classes. We need both in sketching. It’s a learning, observing journey.  Seeing where eye level is for the first time is very new to most people.  But when you realise how it works, and it’s the key to all your outdoor sketching, a new world opens. General classes had gorgeous flowers and even a koi garden this week, between showers. The ideal pretty sketch. […]

Sketching Week 3 Term 4. Colours of Food & Sea

October 24, 2015 by Erin Hill Sketching

This was week 3 and for our General classes it was food glorious food. Extremely healthy mind you. Nothing processed here. Our still life was a beautiful arrangement of artichokes, red radishes, pears, brie with balsamic and black truffle oil bottles. A very nice composition of shapes and colour. The learning this week was to make the colours of food look edible. Easy to get mud!! During the week a class or two tried sketching with both left and right […]

Sketching Week 9. Easter & St Patrick’s

April 11, 2015 by Erin Hill Sketching

This week has been a little like being away somewhere and travel sketching, even though it’s been over 2 separate weeks. Our still life set up was very much to do with Easter, but it was sketched with just paint and your brush in 3 minutes. Colour was then added. Almost as though you’d lost all your pens. Never be held back. Use anything at hand to sketch. Our location was based on sketching a well known icon but not being able […]

Sketching Books and Stories.

October 19, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

Tuesday Class. October 14 ’14 We’re into the second week of term, and our class is swelling in size and enthusiasm. We’ve all arrived a bit early, and are very keen to get started. Today we’re looking at a stack of rather old books. Some of my favourites are piled here, such as “The Water Babies” and even an old dictionary. Old book covers can make interesting and characterful sketches! It doesn’t take long before the penny drops that we’re […]

Term 2 Sketching Begins

May 4, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

We are back for a new and polished up term. We tutors have spent time listening to what you’d like in your classes and that’s they way we work. So the new classes reflect that. This week’s blog comes to you from the South of France where I’m sketching with 3 painter girls for the week. Two from Texas, one from NZ and little me from Sydney. It’s a clear blue day and everything looks so lovely. Roses and aromatic vines climbing […]
