Week 2. Term 1 – Shape, tone, texture

February 10, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Intro classes were discovering round shapes and our particular way of showing dimension – white top and sides, dark down the centre. Lemons and limes give a great chance to show how darks behind whites give you that depth in the fastest way. Travel Sketching classes were looking at techniques for brick, render and sandstone. We picked the 3 colours we’d use a base here and tried both watercolour and aquarelle to try different effects. Then either vignettes or entrances […]

Quelle est la date aujourd’hui?

August 18, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

Sketch&French. Neuf heures trente. Le 18 Aout. Well you know that deal I have with the weather. It didn’t work for long. Absolutely bucketing down out there. I was bringing our house guest to today’s class because she was keen to see what happens in a S&F class. Sandrine was doing quite a bit of revision today, which is a very good idea. The kind of questions you’d want to ask plus the answers you’d expect to hear.  Everything from […]

Sketching Vignettes. Small Aspects of Something Bigger.

July 26, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

New Sketchers. 10am Tuesday July 22 ’14. We had a very happy group of New Sketchers arriving ready for their second sketching  day. Christie explained what the subjects were about and how we would approach them. Vignettes it would be. The little snippets or small aspects of something bigger. What we were looking at was carved boxes, decorative bowls and stands, a Vietnamese dagger and a Victorian mantelpiece support. Sketch any or all, and perhaps spread them over two pages […]

Sketching – The Way we Were.

June 28, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY CLASSES COMBINED 10AM. JUNE 26 ’14 After the high winds we’ve had for 2 days, it was back to blue and lovely for our Sketching class. Christy and I decided we’d combine our classes, as several sketchers have completed their course, or away for the holidays, so it made sense. We are a great team, and the sketchers get double the love. We had a lovely big group and much chatter and laughter took place before we settled into […]

Sketching ‘things that go away’

June 7, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

In other words the dreaded p e r s p e c t i v e. THURSDAY 10AM GENERAL CLASS. JUNE 5 ’14. Is that rain I hear? Oh well it’s only 6am so it will surely clear for our sketch classes. This week we’d decided some ‘Perspective’ would be helpful. It does take our brains some time to SEE where all the lines go, but once you do, you’ll have the answer to how perspective works. In the Studio for […]

Shiny Silver and the Monument

November 23, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 21. 2013. A great day to be out & about travel sketching. Big class. Three tutors to assist anybody in need. This week we are doing antique silver. Learning to get those elegant shapes and little decorative flourishes without getting too caught up. Getting the initial pieces where you want them on your page is the first challenge. However it’s colour we’re really looking at. Using watercolour is very rewarding or very frustrating. You are going to learn […]

Mannequins and Shop Displays

November 16, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 14. 2013 It’s  a gorgeous day today. Sitting in the sun very early, I can hear happy birds, and watch the ferries plying all those lucky people travelling by water to the city. It will be a good day. Christy and I are guiding our class today in observing the mannequins which are our sketching setups this week. There’s a single one and an action pair. It’s very pleasing the way everyone gets stuck in. People […]

Square-on Architecture

November 9, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 7. 2013 Our classes are planned so that we cover as many everyday situations as you might run into when out  & about sketching. Architecture is one subject you’d be hard pressed to avoid in almost any place you’d be visiting. Today we are looking at the shorthand version of perspective. In fact by standing square on to your subject you get the main characteristics without wondering how to deal with the disappearing parts. We have some tiny […]

Je Voudrais une Table prés de la Fenétre

November 5, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Our Sketch & French class today started with sketching tiny model houses. This week we are sketching houses and buildings. Just a single front] was all we needed. When travelling you do see some quaint little flower shops or boulangeries or a stone corner store which you’d love to sketch. So I’ve used the ‘stand in front’ idea to avoid too much perspective or angles which may confuse one. By standing directly in front of it you’ll get all […]
