Sketch&lunch-Malaysian

March 2, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

February was Malaysian Sketch&Lunch. We had a ball in Chinatown, Sydney. The Nasi Lemak at Ho Jiak (a relatively new Malaysian streetfood restaurant on Hay St) was absolutely delicious! The wagu beef rendang was to die for so was the the Char Kway Teow (a rice noodle dish with king prawns and the “breath of the wok”) We ate with relish whilst learning to sketch ellipses and capturing the cups of tea and coffee Malaysian style. Next we headed out […]

Sunday Workshop. Sketching & Simple Colour

February 18, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Sunday February 18 ’18 Another glorious Sydney day. How do we cope! coming along to one of very enjoyable ‘Taste of Sketching’ Workshops helps a lot. Once we get started with observing our subject, we’re quite unaware of what might be happening out there in the world!  We’re very busy observing only what’s in front of us. Sketching is one of these wonderful moments in time where you are completely immersed in playing with line and colour. Totally in the […]

Sketching ‘things that go away’

June 7, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

In other words the dreaded p e r s p e c t i v e. THURSDAY 10AM GENERAL CLASS. JUNE 5 ’14. Is that rain I hear? Oh well it’s only 6am so it will surely clear for our sketch classes. This week we’d decided some ‘Perspective’ would be helpful. It does take our brains some time to SEE where all the lines go, but once you do, you’ll have the answer to how perspective works. In the Studio for […]

International Sketchcrawl. Sat Jan 25 ’14

January 25, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

We are ahead of the world on the clock, so while most people are still in bed sleeping, we in Sydney are out there sketching our little hearts out. It’s International Sketchcrawl Day. We sketch wherever we are and they are posted by sketchers around the Globe. It was just Alissa, Chris, Lisa and I sketching underneath the massive iron structure which is the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We met there in the morning and started our first sketch of the […]

Shells, Canal Houses & Sushi at Sunset

December 5, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

It was a full class tonight, with most students already set up and sketching at 6.30pm. Seems everyone had been looking forward to doing our shell and Dutch canal house sketching since last week.. Cathy questioned whether she should sketch a canal house, seeing as she had done so while she was actually IN Amsterdam on a recent trip…but she ended up doing a very nice sketch anyway…and we all admired the pictures on the wrapping of the chocolates she […]

Each Other & Walk&Sketch time

October 26, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY OCTOBER 24 ’13 My goodness what a gorgeous day. Only a hint of bushfire smoke first thing, and they say the worst may be over. So off I go to the Studio to be there good and early as I like to be. Then I can set up the still life for the day.  I have little roses Ive found on the way here, in a jar on each table –  because I like them. But today is different. […]

Coconuts with everything. Last day at Daku Resort.

October 4, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Friday Sept 20 Woke up at 5am today. I’m an early person. Birds are getting  out of their nests at the same time as me. And singing. With a nice cuppa tea I sit outside in the planters chair and watch Savusavu wake for almost the last time this week. Instead of yoga today its decided we need a class lesson in paint and colour. It’s easier to cover the core skills together like this than on location. We are […]

Round & Oblong shapes, Big Gates & Pizza

September 7, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY SEPT 5 ’13 What a glorious day for me to return to the Studio. Today I felt a little perspective should be back on board after all the cake- ish things we’ve sketched recently. Round and box shapes. Watch the way boxes become narrower as they go away. Notice that round things have no pointed corners! Everybody did well, and although a couple of brain freezes occurred, but were back on track seeing well again in a second. Through […]

Sydney Sketch Club at Bastille Day Markets

July 13, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Markets are busy and colourful places and very appealing to sketchers. But of course there is so much going on, you have to think about how your sketches will sum up the occasion. I liked the ‘Delicate Cakes’ marquee with it’s beautiful little cake art pieces and its croquembouche centrepiece. From where I was, slightly behind it and on the rise, I could observe well. This was our Sydney Sketch club Meetup and International Sketchcrawl. Jennifer placed herself in front […]
