Week 6 Term 1. Mixed media, lines & stories

March 10, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

WEEK 6. SATURDAY MARCH 10 ’18 Another week and even more progress.  Intro Sketchers faced up to Eye Level Perspective. Usually a big mystery along with big groans.  It can evoke some worry especially for those who’ve never had it properly explained. But with our step by step guides, people do begin to see how it works. It’s a great feeling. Another notch in your belt! I can do it. Travel Sketchers were using lines and marks in many different […]

Sketch&lunch-Malaysian

March 2, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

February was Malaysian Sketch&Lunch. We had a ball in Chinatown, Sydney. The Nasi Lemak at Ho Jiak (a relatively new Malaysian streetfood restaurant on Hay St) was absolutely delicious! The wagu beef rendang was to die for so was the the Char Kway Teow (a rice noodle dish with king prawns and the “breath of the wok”) We ate with relish whilst learning to sketch ellipses and capturing the cups of tea and coffee Malaysian style. Next we headed out […]

Week4.Term1. First Watercolours & Co- Sketching

February 24, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Saturday February 24 ’18 Week 4 means first use of watercolours for our Introductory Sketchers. Having learned the colours and the layering system already, it now follows through with doing similar but with paint. Always an exciting day! You’re starting to feel like a ‘real’ artist now. For our more experienced sketchers we were looking at shape and form of people. But this would be very different. We’d be sketching who we saw, but sharing our sketchbooks around. When you […]

Sunday Workshop. Sketching & Simple Colour

February 18, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Sunday February 18 ’18 Another glorious Sydney day. How do we cope! coming along to one of very enjoyable ‘Taste of Sketching’ Workshops helps a lot. Once we get started with observing our subject, we’re quite unaware of what might be happening out there in the world!  We’re very busy observing only what’s in front of us. Sketching is one of these wonderful moments in time where you are completely immersed in playing with line and colour. Totally in the […]

Week3.Term1. Lagoon Life and Beaches

February 17, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Saturday February 17 ’18 Some fun sketches resulted from all the excellent locations you’ve traveled to for Week 3. From Narrabeen Lagoon to Centennial Park and Wentworth Falls Lake, we found tranquility among the thriving wildlife. Ducks and ducklings, geese, swans, pigeons, magpies, ibis, gulls, parrots and pelicans, All performed brilliantly. All of these were scattered across our pages using many differing techniques to get a variety of looks. Intro classes had a beach day, starting with a 3 colour […]

Week 2. Term 1 – Shape, tone, texture

February 10, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Intro classes were discovering round shapes and our particular way of showing dimension – white top and sides, dark down the centre. Lemons and limes give a great chance to show how darks behind whites give you that depth in the fastest way. Travel Sketching classes were looking at techniques for brick, render and sandstone. We picked the 3 colours we’d use a base here and tried both watercolour and aquarelle to try different effects. Then either vignettes or entrances […]

Holiday Sketching.

January 29, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Wednesday January 24 ’18. Bella Vista with Kathy We are rather used to having our Holiday sketching at Bella Vista with just the locals and luckily for us this week, we could sit in the shade under the massive Morton Bay trees and sketch in a small breeze. Kathy had found the glorious gum flowers which look exactly like upside down ballet tutus. Kathy is so good with her ways to treat what’s in front of you in different ways […]

ErinHill Sketching. Discovery Day at North Head Manly

January 21, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Discovery Day. NorthHead Project. January 21 ’18. Erin Hill Sketchers   Our spot on the map – No 15 –  and the special sign on the dusty pathway said our sketchers would be at Cemetery No 3. The temperatures were due to reach 30C but luckily did not in fact. So finding shade meant we were comfortable. While folk were doing tours with the very knowledgeable volunteers, they could ask us about sketching and how we capture a moment quickly. […]

Tutors in Training take their First Class

January 19, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Friday January 19 ’18 At the end of week 1 of our Tutor Training, our trainees get the chance to try out their new skills. Today we would descend on Bella Vista Cafe early enough to beat the lunchtime crowds, which we did, on a most glorious Sydney day. Each had a table away from the others, and a group of two or three volunteer guests happy to try their hand at Travel Sketching over the next hour and half. […]
