Round & Oblong shapes, Big Gates & Pizza

September 7, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY SEPT 5 ’13 What a glorious day for me to return to the Studio. Today I felt a little perspective should be back on board after all the cake- ish things we’ve sketched recently. Round and box shapes. Watch the way boxes become narrower as they go away. Notice that round things have no pointed corners! Everybody did well, and although a couple of brain freezes occurred, but were back on track seeing well again in a second. Through […]

The big Birthday, Sweet Sugar Lounge & Creating a Travel Sketching Journal with Alissa. Whew.

August 24, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY AUGUST 22 ’13 Oooh a chilly day. Blue skies for a while, but warm clothes the order of the day. But our subject for this week is very special and brings sunshiny smiles. One of our sketcher girls has turned 70. So to celebrate every class will be sketching birthday cakes and tarts. We won’t see Birthday Barb till tomorrow but at least everyone this week can share the fun in advance. Sketching only of course. No nibbling! Yet. […]

Cacti, Blooms & Waffles. A Chat with Alissa.

August 17, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY AUGUST 15 ’13 Sunny and chirpy. That’s how everyone felt when they arrived. Nothing scary on the tables. Unless cacti are scary! A cute trio of Mexican red and yellow cacti with tiny wee prickles that wouldn’t hurt a flea. Sitting with a fat dove garden ornament. Other table. Nice square bowl of succulents. A pot of round leafed ones with delicate pink florets. We still have to watch the elipses. Round things don’t have pointed corners. Very cheerful […]

Sketching Together

July 26, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

A couple of sketches done recently, with Jeanette from country Victoria and Vivianne, one of our effervescent tutors. One in line and watercolour, the other in line and watercolour pencil. Sketching together is so enjoyable. The coffee order placed, then the silence as we sketch away at whatever is around us. We were on the ferry to Sydney together, just Jeanette and I as part of her Sketch & Stay week. This was quite a highlight for her. To think […]

Where I sketch in the South of France

July 12, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

I’m sketching in Trausse in May 2014, to catch up with the changes and restorations Marilyn and Steve have made since my last visit. Don’t you just love this little garden above. Although I’ll be doing my own sketching for them on this trip, I’m planning your next fully escorted Travel Sketching Holiday in Provence for 2015 as we speak. Then I can spend all my time guiding you through the art of Travel Sketching. I also have plans for […]

Glass, Stone, Ceramics and a Birthday

June 15, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY JUNE 13’13 Gorgeous day and none of the pouring rain Wednesday’s class got. We are doing old glass & stone jars and bottles, with a tiny lustrous Satsuma porcelain dish tossed in. All collected over the years and all with a story. The colours needed to be soft and translucent and pick up the touches of reflected colour nearby. The stone bottles are solid and glazed, so again needing lights and darks which make them round, without resorting to […]

Cafe & Beach people, and a little Cuba

June 8, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY JUNE 6 ’13 Slightly overcast today, and chilly in the mornings. Thought you’d like to know that! Today there was nothing on the tables when people arrived. What? Whatever can this mean. Well it means you are sketching each other as if in a cafe. The person sitting with the cup was the model for around 5 minutes or so. Everyone else would sketch like the wind to get the likeness into their books plus colour. We did have […]

Making and Baking Cakes

May 25, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY MAY 23 ’13 Rain has been so rare lately that they made an announcement on the radio to say it was coming. What! Rain in winter! Who’d have thought. So it was out with our coats and umbrellas. Two setups today. One for bowls spoons, graters, jugs etc needed to make a cake, the other was what is needed to bake one. It’s quite interesting to sketch those functional kitchen items we often take for granted. The idea was […]

Gardénia blanc et Camelia rose avec du pain de banane

April 29, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

We had our first Sketch&French class for Term 2 today. What a glorious few weeks of perfect weather we are having. Perfect too for starting another S&F class with a few newcomers to welcome. To make it not too frightening for those who are new to sketching, I always find simple flowers are a lovely way to begin. Your lines will always look like the flower in front of you if you take a moment to really look at it’s shape. […]
