Advanced Sketching. Twigs & Coloured Inks.

June 27, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

ADVANCED SKETCHING  FRIDAY 11.30AM.  JUNE 27 ’14 We arrive as Judy’s class is leaving. Everybody greets each other like long lost friends.  Well we are. Oh and Happy Birthday Judy. What better way to spend it! Today in Advanced sketching, we will work with twigs and coloured inks.  A pile of varying sized twigs to choose as people put out what they’ve found on the way. The inks are the 4 primary colours but not black. Once again we decide […]

Sketching Workshop Taupo New Zealand

December 14, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 11 ’13 Taupo is an enormous and very deep lake, in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand. Surrounded by little settlements and a main town centre, one of the big attractions is the mountains for skiing and trout fishing. When you arrive from the south, it tempts and taunts you as the road dips down to the cold blue water lapping on pumice shores, then takes you back through the forest before leading you back […]

Sunset Sketching. China, Mannequins and The Artichoke

November 22, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

After a 3 week break we had an excited group of sketchers along to tonight’s Sunset sketching class. With two tables set up in the studio, students could choose mannequins or a quaint still life of china. It’s a good time to remind ourselves that we can just have fun with this, it’s only a sketch, an experience, capturing an impression, a moment in time…just enjoy the process…and then turn the page… Mannequins were measured out and coloured and painted, […]

Purple Jacarandas and Green Trees

November 2, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY OCTOBER 31 ’13 Hello’ it’s Christy here. Erin would be joining us a little later this morning, and so to get started I met with the sketchers at the studio before heading to the first sketching point, the Jacaranda tree nestled in a side road across from the studio. We had a cheerful lot today, 9 in total, as we headed for the Jacaranda tree, which we found standing proudly in all it’s purple glory. This particular tree, if […]

Sketching Term 4 – Here We Go

October 12, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY OCT 10 ’13 First Thursday Out & About Travel Sketching for Term 4. Luckily the Studio can be kept cool when the dial on the temperature gauge promises 38 degrees. Not that we change our plans much for rain or shine. There’s always somewhere to shelter. Hardy bunch we are. Some first time sketchers enter the Studio with a little uncertainty. This is a big step for people. To commit to trying something you really wonder if you […]

Waves over Rocks

Acrylic with a touch of line

July 11, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

I liked the way the sea is a deeper colour, and waves come crashing over the rock ledge and over into the shallower rock shelf. I do love these rock water combos, and because it’s where I walk every day, I like to observe the colours and try to use those in my paintings. This painting is done in acrylic but I’ve used a touch of black line as well. It’s based on an original sketch which I keep going […]

Sketching demos – watercolour & white space

January 8, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Usually the demo sketches stay in my sketchbook. These are 2 from a recent lesson which I thought showed my use of layers of watercolour. In other words not pre-mixed in the lid of the paint box. These two were done as the client was sketching the same views/setups. They are done incredibly fast as I’m explaining what I’m doing as I go. Hence the loose look. Just what I want. Less is more as they say. I love to […]

Thurs Nov 15. Croissants, baguettes and coffee

Croissants & Jacarandas

November 17, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

Sketching this week. Nov 15,16,17. This week seems to have a French flavour to it.   Having had our very successful Sketch&French class on Tuesday somehow a little of that has carried on through the week…………… We had the white setting with croissant and gardenia on one table and the more contemporary blue setting with baguette on the other.  Our sketches of the 2 settings look very edible, and definitely catch the mood of the moment. While the Jacarandas are […]

Venice waterways

A little bit of Venice

October 9, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

I didn’t know I was going to do the painting Venice next. It was the small reference sketch on my pinboard which caught my eye as I was thinking about the next painting. My head must still be in Italy, as it often is. Well why not. I obviously liked this view or I wouldn’t have done the sketch and pinned it up on the pinboard. So that was it. Time to start.  Out with the biggest 300gsm  pad and […]
