Term 3 Begins. Observing Nature.

July 19, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

New Sketchers. 10am Tuesday July 15. ’14 Welcome back everybody. To kick off Term 3, your tutors have made some changes to the classes by listening to you our sketchers. We have 3 levels for you, from New Sketchers, General, and Advanced. We’ve also added monthly workshops for those who’d love a full day immersed in doing what they love. Many of you who are travelling or cannot commit to a full term are excited about these. A very excited group […]

Sketching – The Way we Were.

June 28, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY CLASSES COMBINED 10AM. JUNE 26 ’14 After the high winds we’ve had for 2 days, it was back to blue and lovely for our Sketching class. Christy and I decided we’d combine our classes, as several sketchers have completed their course, or away for the holidays, so it made sense. We are a great team, and the sketchers get double the love. We had a lovely big group and much chatter and laughter took place before we settled into […]

Advanced Sketching. Twigs & Coloured Inks.

June 27, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

ADVANCED SKETCHING  FRIDAY 11.30AM.  JUNE 27 ’14 We arrive as Judy’s class is leaving. Everybody greets each other like long lost friends.  Well we are. Oh and Happy Birthday Judy. What better way to spend it! Today in Advanced sketching, we will work with twigs and coloured inks.  A pile of varying sized twigs to choose as people put out what they’ve found on the way. The inks are the 4 primary colours but not black. Once again we decide […]

Sketching Boston, with a dash of NYC.

June 25, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

I’m surprised by how much water and shoreline I can see from the plane as we make our landing. Boston. What will I think. How will it be. Well, it’ll take a few days of images and impressions to float by me before I’ll begin to know. Spring has certainly sprung. I know it snowed recently so I’m surprised that it’s so hot and blue. Clear Cobalt. 27degrees. New green shoots on the sycamore trees are a smudge of Sap […]

Advanced Sketching. Coloured Fibre Pens & Watercolour.

June 21, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

FRIDAY 11.30AM. ADVANCED SKETCHING. JUNE 20 ’14. This week we are trying waterproof coloured fibre pens. Because we quite liked the setups already in place, our sketchers were happy to get stuck in and use those as the basis for their coloured pen work. You could do the whole sketch in one colour, or change to another crazy colour at any moment. Even half way through an object if you felt like it. Why not. And don’t forget to breathe! […]

Sketching His and Hers Travel Toiletries

June 21, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY 10AM GENERAL SKETCHING. JUNE 19 ’14. Oh look at those blue skies.  It’s chilly first and last thing, but you know you’ll be pealing off the layers in the middle of the day. So – wear layers. This week we are going into the bathroom and seeing what toiletries you travel with. On one table HIS choice.  The other table HER choice. We have an interesting sketch to do in 30 mins and get colour on. Lots of shapes […]

Fearlessly Sketching People

June 14, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY 10AM GENERAL SKETCHING. JUNE 12 ’14 I can see blue skies and not a rain cloud anywhere. We begin this week with people sketching.  This and perspective would be the 2 subjects people think they cannot do. Something of a blockage occurs early in our lives when we can’t get it ‘right’.  So we decide not to go there again. However, when you are shown what to look for it all begins to make sense. Some of the sketches […]

Advanced Sketching. Water Soluble Wax Crayons

June 14, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

Great sketching weather this week. This meant our Advanced class could try out their techniques outside today. For this week we are trying Caran D’ache water soluble wax crayons.  We have a small tin of them so everyone can share the colours to start their sketch.  Each sketcher creates their own warmup still life, either with things from the Studio, or something from home. Some very appealing choices including a tiny Dog on the Tuckerbox , from the classic Aussie legend. Tape […]

Sketching Vietnamese Street Food

May 24, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY 10AM CLASS. MAY 22 2014. Well we decided to go a bit tropical this week (dreaming of holidays in South-East Asia) so I delved into the kitchen cupboards and Voila! A veritable assortment of fruit and veg and spices ready to make a stir fry – yum! Before the class I went to my lemongrass bush and picked a few stalks and they are so fragrant it’s just delicious, they filled my car with their aroma ( better than […]
