“Sketching Makes Me Glad I’m Alive”

November 9, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

One of my sketchers sent me this article, by Andrew Marr, a life-long sketcher, who is exhibiting in London, and responds to the deafening disapproval by ‘Real Artists’ that we sketchers would dare to call what we do Art. Fascinating. “Art snobs sneer at amateurs like me – but painting makes me glad I’m alive”  Survivor ANDREW MARR on a life-changing passion.   ‘One of the most southerly town in Chile, en route to Tierra del Fuego’   Look around, and you […]

Purple Jacarandas and Green Trees

November 2, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY OCTOBER 31 ’13 Hello’ it’s Christy here. Erin would be joining us a little later this morning, and so to get started I met with the sketchers at the studio before heading to the first sketching point, the Jacaranda tree nestled in a side road across from the studio. We had a cheerful lot today, 9 in total, as we headed for the Jacaranda tree, which we found standing proudly in all it’s purple glory. This particular tree, if […]

Waves over Rocks

Acrylic with a touch of line

July 11, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

I liked the way the sea is a deeper colour, and waves come crashing over the rock ledge and over into the shallower rock shelf. I do love these rock water combos, and because it’s where I walk every day, I like to observe the colours and try to use those in my paintings. This painting is done in acrylic but I’ve used a touch of black line as well. It’s based on an original sketch which I keep going […]

Sketch your Cake at Bather's Pavilion

New Painting. Cake & Coffee

July 2, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

I’ve had a large canvas hanging on the wall in the Studio, gessoed and ready for painting – for ages. Today the stars were aligned and I mixed up new paint in the acrylic pallette and started a painting. It’s large. 36 X 24 inches. And it’s for sale! $395. I’d decided decorative cakes were what I felt like, as I have so many sketches done at Sketch your Cake High Teas and other occasions, in so many of my […]

Sketching demos – watercolour & white space

January 8, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Usually the demo sketches stay in my sketchbook. These are 2 from a recent lesson which I thought showed my use of layers of watercolour. In other words not pre-mixed in the lid of the paint box. These two were done as the client was sketching the same views/setups. They are done incredibly fast as I’m explaining what I’m doing as I go. Hence the loose look. Just what I want. Less is more as they say. I love to […]

Beach Sketch Painting

Acrylic & Line Beach Painting

September 29, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

This is another in my 12 inch square acrylic and line beach paintings. The series are all based on location sketches, and which looked as though they’d translate to a larger size than the original A5. I really like this one. The colours are right, the composition works and it has a very cheerful ambience to it. Available in SHOP. ©ErinHill2012

A little bit of Venice

October 9, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

I didn’t know I was going to do the painting Venice next. It was the small reference sketch on my pinboard which caught my eye as I was thinking about the next painting. My head must still be in Italy, as it often is. Well why not. I obviously liked this view or I wouldn’t have done the sketch and pinned it up on the pinboard. So that was it. Time to start.  Out with the biggest 300gsm  pad and […]

Fairlight Beach as it has never looked before.

Beach Painting in a new Style

September 2, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

It’s fine and dandy to think you can paint like the Masters. I keep looking at the Vlaminck and then at the ErinHill and there is an ocean of difference. His has nice slabs of changing colour and he doesn’t outline everything, or in the same thickness. Now I want to get back to Paris and find this painting to see it in the raw. And no I’m not waiting 2 hrs in any queue, it’s too urgent for that. […]

Beginning Fairlight Beach Acrylic

Next Experimental Painting

August 31, 2010 by Erin Hill Sketching

I have a Vlaminck page in a sketchbook of drawings and reference I’d collected, and decided to have a crack at this style. His is of trees and a house, but no matter, mine is based on some photos I did along the beach walk, so not much similarity there!. It’s the colours he used I loved, and then big black lines all over it to define the shapes of things. I taped up the painting block, and began putting […]
