Yves Saint Laurent also Sketches

October 27, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Happened to be thumbing through the August 2013 Vogue Australia, ( no not in the doctor’s waiting room, or it would be the 1999 edition! ) and on the last page, called Voguepedia, was a b/w sketch which really took my eye. The fine print at the base of the page describes it thus: In 1969, British Vogue commissioned the enigmatic Yves Saint Laurent to share his likes and loves in his own personal ‘dream wall’ sketch. Almost 45 years […]

Briques et pâtisseries délicieuses

September 2, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 2 ’13 It was our last class in Term 3 for our Sketch & French students. We always start with the Sketch part of class, and now that everyone has learned to ‘see shapes’ and can visually measure, before putting pen to paper – we went outdoors. Woohoo. Just as in our travel sketching classes, we start inside and then go outside. So round the corner we went and chose brick posts and letterboxes, and a brick archway. […]

Je suis astronaute, et vous?

August 5, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Monday August 5 ’13 Our Sketch&French travel sketching is stepping up the pace a little this week. Some interesting angles to observe, and not many had ever learned this. Perspective in other words. If it’s closer to you it’s bigger. As it goes away it’s going to get smaller. Christy was also on hand today, so we could both give some guidance to some who may have struggled so soon on their sketching adventure. As you’ll see in the sketches, […]

New Sketch&French Starts Soon

March 28, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

We have just completed our Term 1 Five week course, and our next one starts on Monday April 29. One of the class members said she loved coming and it was so nice doing something for herself, not the business. Come join the fun. Our class on March19, was essentially on shopping in Paris. We always start with a freshly made tea or coffee just to get in the mood, as we begin our sketches. We had a fabulous silver, […]

Double page Sketch Spread in French Living Magazine

December 11, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

This is soooooooooo exciting. Claire Chaffey the editor of French Living magazine had asked me for a few of my French sketches – to scatter through the magazine. This is a BIG scatter – right across 2 pages. Cést Magnifique.  I’ve had wonderful response to these sketches, so I’ve looked at doing a print series. Prints now available.  Merci beaucoup. The Summer issue is out. It’s not snowing here in Australia, but might be in France – which is the […]

My Perfume

My New Perfume

November 21, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

BALENCIAGA, PARIS It’s a pre Christmas perfume from someone very lovely. AAAaaaaaaaaaah. I couldn’t wait till Christmas and decided now was the moment. For some people it’s chocolate, for me it’s perfume. Has to be opened now! It’s quite interesting to try a new perfume when you’ve spent years finding and savouring the ones that mean so much to you. You feel it’ll have a lot to live up to to join that historical stable of time, place and memories. All […]

From my Window

From my Window

September 13, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

New work. Watercolour and line. Completed today. I have a ‘thing’ for French windows. It’s that possibility of turning an ordinary view into something extraordinary. I love to have some personal things on the sill, and then take you to what’s beyond. It could be Sydney, Paris or a brick wall. But looking out through French windows makes it magic. ©ErinHill2012

Les Parisiennes- Jours de France 1959

Kiraz- one of my favourite French Illustrators

June 10, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

I was very lucky to catch an exhibition in Paris in 2010 of Kiraz’s fabulous sketches and illustrations. I didn’t know his work even though I’d been in Advertising in the 70’s & 80’s when many illustrators worked in similar styles. I now realise where the influence would have come from. He’d gone to Paris in 1946 and began sketching for the newspapers of the time. His ‘Parisiennes’  were launched in 1959 in the newly launched ‘Jours de France’ and […]

Temples of Exquisite Food

April 19, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

Part of the pleasure of eating beautiful food, is the surrounds you are in. Atmosphere is a large part of setting of the scene. The colour. The decor.  The table setting. The sounds. The feeling. The mood . The greeting. The view. The aroma. The anticipation. The menu. People arriving. I like being at a table and silently observing what’s going on. Seeing people arrive. Being seated. Their response. How they relate. How they respond when their food arrives. It’s great being […]
