Week6.Term4. Looking for Eye Level

November 19, 2016 by Erin Hill Sketching

EHS SYDNEY WEEK 6 TERM 4 ’16 Week 6 and we are now seeing our own styles come shining through. You only have your own style as you know, so embrace it. Other influences may be there but there’s only one you. We’ve covered a big variety of subjects this week. New Sketchers were into eye level perspective, the very key to everything you’ll need to know when sketching urban landscapes. The concept is easy to grasp once we lead you through […]

Sketching Week 9. Easter & St Patrick’s

April 11, 2015 by Erin Hill Sketching

This week has been a little like being away somewhere and travel sketching, even though it’s been over 2 separate weeks. Our still life set up was very much to do with Easter, but it was sketched with just paint and your brush in 3 minutes. Colour was then added. Almost as though you’d lost all your pens. Never be held back. Use anything at hand to sketch. Our location was based on sketching a well known icon but not being able […]

Sketching Week 4. Gnomes & Homes. .

February 28, 2015 by Erin Hill Sketching

A very cheerful couple of gnomes with their gardening tools graced our tables this week.  Observing their chunky little shapes and chipmunk cheeks proved trickier than one thought. This was the first watercolour week for some. Keep your colours clean. Each colour into the palette. No pre-mixing. Here was a great chance to really feel what the colours can do, and to correct old habits. With some test swatches in our books it was round the corner to a decorative […]

Sketching Teacups & Terrace Houses

May 12, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

This week’s posting comes to you from Toulouse in the South of France. Our girls Painting/Sketching week in our French Village has just come to a close. Sniff sniff. So now we are about to head to Boston. Your tutors have done a marvellous job this week and all the words and pics have flown via the cloud to my little MacAir. Well almost. I seem to missing some teacups but I’m sure you’ll forgive me. Anyway, on with the […]

Start With Your Eye Level

March 1, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY FEB 27 10am class Week 4 begins. We didn’t believe it was going to rain. Reports for days said it would. I like to look at the sky and clouds and work it out myself. It might matter a teeny bit if we got rain because we’re doing perspective from a high pathway, looking down over rooftops and beyond. But of course we would first start in the Studio  with our warm sketches of Frenchboxes and building blocks. We talked […]

Tues Aug 21. Building block houses

Sketch Class this Week: Tues 21. Thurs 23. Fri 24. August ’12

August 24, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

TUESDAY AUGUST 21. We had two houses made of blocks on the tables today. Both girls sat and sketched one, leaving the other for next time. I’m going skiing instead decided one!! We are now really looking at what goes away above and below your eye level. This is the key to it. Seeing the angles and getting it quickly down on paper. Down the hill we went and along to the meeting place outside the New Brighton Hotel where […]

Thursday Aug 9 House detail Sketches

Thursday 9 & Friday10 August Sketch Classes

August 10, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

Today we started with the human form – the little wooden mannequins. They are a very simple way of seeing the proportions of the body. If you are out and about sketching, it’s going to be hard to avoid people getting in your way – so might as well get the form into your head and get them into your sketches. If you can’t beat them join them. Some of our students love to get a person sitting somewhere, and […]

Tuesday July 31st. Books & Buildings

July 31, 2012 by Erin Hill Sketching

TUESDAY JULY 31ST. We did stacked up books today, as a way of learning perspective. One has much to consider with these setups. It matters if things are lining up actually. If you observe where one book cuts in behind or in front of another, like pieces of a puzzle, then you will have a very pleasing sketch. You can see how differently each person approaches their subject, and all of them work. Then because it was a fine day […]
