Sketch&Lunch-A Taste of India

July 13, 2017 by Erin Hill Sketching

On the last Monday of the month Erin Hill Sketching holds a Sketch&lunch day trip. June’s trip was “A taste of India”. We limit group size to 8, and that way we can access smaller out of the way and off the tourist beat, cultural delights. We met at the train station. Thats easy. Harris Park first, then later we headed to Wentworthville. For many of us, this in itself was an adventure! Then we proceeded to the most unlikely […]

International Sketchcrawl. Sat Jan 25 ’14

January 25, 2014 by Erin Hill Sketching

We are ahead of the world on the clock, so while most people are still in bed sleeping, we in Sydney are out there sketching our little hearts out. It’s International Sketchcrawl Day. We sketch wherever we are and they are posted by sketchers around the Globe. It was just Alissa, Chris, Lisa and I sketching underneath the massive iron structure which is the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We met there in the morning and started our first sketch of the […]

Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden

December 16, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY DECEMBER 12 ’13 Hello’ it’s Christy here. Today we were off to sketch ‘Wendy Whiteley’s Garden’, also known as the ‘Secret Garden’.  And the secret is out. This garden, snugly situated in Lavender Bay is  well worth visiting and our group were in for a special day of sketching. There were 3 of us on the ferry from Manly to Luna Park today, where we’d be meeting up with everyone. The ferry ride to the city always feels special […]

Melbourne Cup Day, Hats & High Heels

November 6, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

It’s the day Australians dress up. I mean r-e-a-l-l-y dress up. Hats , high heels, designer frocks, Top hats and tails – and everything in between. This is Melbourne Cup. The first Tuesday in November. Big day in Oz. A public holiday in Melbourne CBD. Might as well be a national Holiday. Is anybody at work? Glenys my painting friend from NZ was to be in Sydney on this day and wanted to know what we’d be doing. MMMmm. Lets […]

Purple Jacarandas and Green Trees

November 2, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY OCTOBER 31 ’13 Hello’ it’s Christy here. Erin would be joining us a little later this morning, and so to get started I met with the sketchers at the studio before heading to the first sketching point, the Jacaranda tree nestled in a side road across from the studio. We had a cheerful lot today, 9 in total, as we headed for the Jacaranda tree, which we found standing proudly in all it’s purple glory. This particular tree, if […]

Jacarandas et Quelle est ma taille?

October 30, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Monday October 28 ’13 Luckily the magnificent Jacarandas stayed in bloom throughout the huge downpour this morning. I had visions of tramping through the soggy ground and picking a forlorn branch, to pop into a vase and for sketching. But no, being Sydney, we get on with things.  Rain, yes had that this morning. Time for some sunshine this afternoon. So the Sketch&French girls do get the opportunity to do their Jacaranda sketches actually on dry ground, and the tree […]

Bushfires and Memories

October 22, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Australia is a country of contrasts. We have deserts and mountains, rivers and beaches. We also have extreme climate. Floods, fire and pestilence are part of our lives here. The Blue Mountains are on fire. Right now. This minute. They say this has always been so, and that it’s a pattern which comes and goes. But its hard when we are in the middle of this. We feel so for the people and animals, the birds and flowers which may […]

Jasmine, Bushfires, Garbage and Cake

October 19, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY OCTOBER 17 ’13 I smell bush fires. A hint of jasmine. Odd mix. The Rainbow Lorikeets squeak with joy as they hang upside down looking for sweet pollen in red bottlebrush tree outside. I open the door to see them and that’s when my nose does a double twitch as the smell of bushfires fills the air. The sky is a threatening salmon pink. The Blue Mountains are on fire. But we must press on. Off to see everyone […]

The Boatshed Balmoral

August 1, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

I’ve seen the Boatshed morph from being – a boatshed, through several upgrades, but this one looks to be the most extensive. Now you can wander the full length of the outside walkway and find a table where they used to pull the dinghies out from storage. I liked the smaller table near the entrance where I could look out to sea, past the enclosed old swimming pool to the far shores – and sketch. I was waiting to meet […]
