Sketching Together

July 26, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

A couple of sketches done recently, with Jeanette from country Victoria and Vivianne, one of our effervescent tutors. One in line and watercolour, the other in line and watercolour pencil. Sketching together is so enjoyable. The coffee order placed, then the silence as we sketch away at whatever is around us. We were on the ferry to Sydney together, just Jeanette and I as part of her Sketch & Stay week. This was quite a highlight for her. To think […]

Shoes, Manly Wharf, & Mexican

July 20, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY JULY 18 ’13 First day back to the Studio, still life waiting and sketchbooks poised. For something to get our observation skills tuned up, but not too challenging after a break, we had shoes. Sneakers on one table and ladies shoes on the other. Plus a cacti with one, and soft yellow hibiscus with the other. That was to welcome Penny to our class, and it’s easier to get some simple flower shapes down while learning to visually measure. […]

Sydney Sketch Club at Bastille Day Markets

July 13, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Markets are busy and colourful places and very appealing to sketchers. But of course there is so much going on, you have to think about how your sketches will sum up the occasion. I liked the ‘Delicate Cakes’ marquee with it’s beautiful little cake art pieces and its croquembouche centrepiece. From where I was, slightly behind it and on the rise, I could observe well. This was our Sydney Sketch club Meetup and International Sketchcrawl. Jennifer placed herself in front […]

The 9.20am Thursday Manly ferry

The 9.20am Ferry to Sydney

July 7, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

These are the sketches I did each morning on the way to Sydney from the Manly ferry. The first two days we sat up the front, tucked behind the other passengers to keep warm. Blue skies and sunny, but wait till you get out to the heads. Freezing. The third morning we got smart, and headed to the sunny end looking back towards Manly. Slow learners methinks. Fun sketches though. No they are actually not the same passengers! ©ErinHill2013

Sydney Harbour in all it’s Glory

July 6, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY JULY 4 ’13 Now this day is one out of the box for our last week of Term 2.  We have the most sensational winter days here in Aus. Unless it’s raining. Clear blue skies, sun shining brightly, green leaves budding, water sparkling, coffee and cinnamon wafting from cafes. You do get the picture by now. Most of us headed off on the 9.20am ferry from Manly, some of the others caught the Mosman ferry. Everyone seemed to be […]

Red Roofs, Books & Swedish Fika

June 29, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

THURSDAY JUNE 27 ’13 “Oh not building blocks” was one sketcher’s comment on arrival. Yes but don’t think of them that way. They are red roof tops as you look from above. I agree you need a big imagination for that, but we’re warming up for our street sketching. In fact once we talk about the eye level bit, and which way the blocks are going away from you, it begins to make some sense. Next was sketching on James […]

My City Adventure

June 27, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

My appointment was at 9.30am. That’s ok and I work backwards to work out which ferry I’ll get to the city. There I am on an incredibly wet morning along with crowds also off to the city.  Peak hour. Decide to get the fast ferry. MMmmm. Looked to me like there’d be no chance of all of us squeezing on – but we kept filing forwards. No return now. Managed to find a seat inside the cabin which reminds me more […]

Sketch your Cake before you eat it

June 26, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

My how time flies. We have 6 of these ‘Sketch your Cake and eat it too’ High teas a year. Our 4th for the year,  we were holding at the redeveloped Quarantine Station, a marvellous north facing headland with views of the harbour on two sides. It was not quite as much fun if you’d been on an infected ship because you could see freedom but not have it. Not till you were cleared or cured. The third option was […]

Young Queen Victoria

A Birthday with the Queen

June 10, 2013 by Erin Hill Sketching

Today was the Queen’s Birthday and a holiday. Today I could sketch with Sydney Sketch Club. We met where a young Queen Victoria stands elegantly outside St James Church, with Prince Albert her consort, on the other side of the street. Between them is a view to the majestic Hyde Park fountain. The second Queen Victoria monument is a couple of blocks away outside a beautiful old building named after her. You suddenly see how much more mature and a […]
