Sydney.Summer Sketching. Rain Rain Rain

January 5, 2016 by Erin Hill Sketching

Tuesday Jan 5 ’16 The forecast was for rain so it was hardly a surprise that it did. Not that it was cold, just raindrops kept falling on our heads – till we hurried inside at Crinitis. A good group of us today and already settled wondering what we’d be doing. Rain of course. Usually we look for blue skies and sun regardless of what is actually happening. But there will be days when there’s very little blue around so that’s […]

Sketch&Wine.Nov28’15. Christmas Cards

December 2, 2015 by Erin Hill Sketching

Judy hosted a really enjoyable and creative night with loads of ideas for using all sorts of ‘found’ bits and pieces to make lovely and very personal little artworks. Sketchers could copy or use some of the ornaments or decorations for inspiration. Everyone loved it! Judy did a few demos to give everyone ideas using simple bright sketches and adding and gluing on whatever you felt like. One Sketcher told Judy she spent all of the next day making cards as she […]

Sketching Week 4 Term 4 ’15. Shape & The Big Vista

October 31, 2015 by Erin Hill Sketching

Week 4 already and our General classes decided to sketch a Big Vista. That means weather has to be spot on. No wind or rain. Every class scored but Tuesday, however they bravely fought off the elements and managed to produce some great sketches. The plan with something big and with lots going on is to find a focus. What is your main features or icons? Here’s where composition comes into it. An landmark such as St Patrick’s monastery is a […]

Sketching Week 2 Term 4. Summer Fashion

October 17, 2015 by Erin Hill Sketching

Week 2 and we became followers of fashion. Our Regular classes found 2 displays of summer clothing on the Studio floor. What is this? You could see the puzzled looks. An outfit laid out for chaps and another for the girls. What are we learning this week? To really see those shapes and how to fit them onto your page. Like a jigsaw puzzle.  A good exercise too in using patterns and stripes. Then to Tommy Bahama fashion store on […]

Sketching Week 1. Term 4. Looking at Shape.

October 10, 2015 by Erin Hill Sketching

Off to a flying start for our first week of Term 4. We have 2 New Sketcher classes and both did extremely well as you will see from the sketches below.   We spend time on the foundation skills in the Studio when you begin, getting familiar with page planning, observing and first steps in colour. What you learn here is the core of our EH travel sketching program. We had a visitor this week. Tony McNeight from Auckland in New […]

September 30, 2015 by Erin Hill Sketching

Now with our Intensives, you may not take home lots of pretty pictures! But by golly you’ll learn a lot and have many pages of techniques to learn from in […]

Saturday Intensive. June 27 ’15. Sketching and Watercolour

July 7, 2015 by Erin Hill Sketching

Another lovely Winter’s Day in Sydney met us for our Intensive – chilly in the shade but glorious in the sun. Our sketchers were both new and more experienced so Karen and I worked with everyone to show the magic of watercolour. Flowers were our subject and we used plenty of water and dropped the paint in to watch it explode and create amazing patterns and colours. We were so proud of our new sketchers who threw all their preconceived […]

Sketching Week 9. Shiny metal objects

June 28, 2015 by Erin Hill Sketching

We work through many ways of seeing and observing over a term, and colour is the way to  bring your sketches to life.  We chose ‘shiny, pretty metal’ as a surprise subject, but to show ways of using simple colour to quickly get the metal look. Our Monday New Sketchers learned a lot about perspective using our simple little graph as a way to get started. The corner sketches at the fire station showed you’d begun to understand the concept. Excellent. […]
