Sunday Taste of Sketching Workshop

May 26, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Sunday May 20th ’18 with Tammy Theme this month: Simple Architecture. Once everyone had settled and met each other, our first ‘warmup’ exercise was to observe some iron gates and sketch the colour and texture. A flat perspective of the oldest church in Manly was our next mission. It happens to be Market Day on Sundays, so being very flexible, we moved from our planned sketch spot , and took another view round the corner. Starting with a thumbnail sketch, […]

Sketching in The Greek Isles

April 20, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

April 14 – May 3 2018 Rhodes 1 night *  Halki 4 nights. * Tilos 4 nights. *  Nissiros 3 nights. *  Kalymnos 6 nights. Our Kate is the tutor on this year’s Greek Isles sketch Tour. We love the Dodecanese Isles and Diana, our tour organiser knows we like to change it up a little every two years when we’re there, so these are the islands she’s picked for us. The group all met on an exciting Saturday night […]

Sunday Workshop. Birds of Paradise and Trees

March 18, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Sunday March 18 ’18 What a wonderful and enthusiastic group we had today, even though it hit 38 degrees in Sydney. Donna was my assistant today and immediately took over the coffee making department, and kept an eye on anyone needing a hand. People come from far and wide so sustenance is vital before starting. Before long we were seeing the strong clear shapes of the 3 Birds of Paradise in a watering can beginning to take shape. Certainty that […]

Week5.Term1. Flat Buildings & Fig Trees

March 3, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Week 5. Saturday March 3 ’18 Another glorious sketching week once again.  By week 5 our Intro Sketchers are beginning to see what they can achieve. Such progress in such a short time and it’s very exciting for we tutors too. We’re loving the perspectives we’re seeing from you. First architectural sketch plus using watercolour and look at what a story you’re telling. Nature in many techniques was they way we went for our Travel Sketchers. I’ve had the pleasure of […]

Sketch&lunch-Malaysian

March 2, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

February was Malaysian Sketch&Lunch. We had a ball in Chinatown, Sydney. The Nasi Lemak at Ho Jiak (a relatively new Malaysian streetfood restaurant on Hay St) was absolutely delicious! The wagu beef rendang was to die for so was the the Char Kway Teow (a rice noodle dish with king prawns and the “breath of the wok”) We ate with relish whilst learning to sketch ellipses and capturing the cups of tea and coffee Malaysian style. Next we headed out […]

Week4.Term1. First Watercolours & Co- Sketching

February 24, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Saturday February 24 ’18 Week 4 means first use of watercolours for our Introductory Sketchers. Having learned the colours and the layering system already, it now follows through with doing similar but with paint. Always an exciting day! You’re starting to feel like a ‘real’ artist now. For our more experienced sketchers we were looking at shape and form of people. But this would be very different. We’d be sketching who we saw, but sharing our sketchbooks around. When you […]

Sunday Workshop. Sketching & Simple Colour

February 18, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Sunday February 18 ’18 Another glorious Sydney day. How do we cope! coming along to one of very enjoyable ‘Taste of Sketching’ Workshops helps a lot. Once we get started with observing our subject, we’re quite unaware of what might be happening out there in the world!  We’re very busy observing only what’s in front of us. Sketching is one of these wonderful moments in time where you are completely immersed in playing with line and colour. Totally in the […]

Week3.Term1. Lagoon Life and Beaches

February 17, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Saturday February 17 ’18 Some fun sketches resulted from all the excellent locations you’ve traveled to for Week 3. From Narrabeen Lagoon to Centennial Park and Wentworth Falls Lake, we found tranquility among the thriving wildlife. Ducks and ducklings, geese, swans, pigeons, magpies, ibis, gulls, parrots and pelicans, All performed brilliantly. All of these were scattered across our pages using many differing techniques to get a variety of looks. Intro classes had a beach day, starting with a 3 colour […]

Week 1 Term 1 ’18. Looking for Shape

February 3, 2018 by Erin Hill Sketching

Our first week of term and back to sketching with a hiss and a roar. I’m sure everyone had a big lie down after their classes. Never has our right brain worked so hard, seeing past what we know and deconstructing our subjects into shapes. Intro classes studied how to make objects in nature into simple shapes. Then how to get that onto a page! Toss in some colour and……there it is. Laneways and alleyways was the subject for Travel […]
